Support me on Shackleton Epic

Please join www.redballoon.com.au and help me take part in the amazing Shackleton Epic expedition to Antarctica. Raise awareness of global environmental challenges and learn from Shackleton as a model leader.

PLEASE NOTE FOR AUSTRALIAN CONTRIBUTORS: ignore the auto-suggestion of a USA post code on first page of donation process. Just add a zero to your Aust post code and proceed to next page.
If the Gofundme site proves difficult to use (outside the USA), or you would rather not use a credit card online, you can make your contribution via an online transfer to my Australian bank account. Please email me for the details.

What is the Shackleton Epic?
In January 2013, leading environmental advisor and Senior Associate with Arup, Tim Jarvis AM, led a successful re-enactment of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1916 journey of survival, sailing a replica of his original 22.5ft wooden boat the James Caird.
Tim's team travelled 1,500 kms across the Southern Ocean from Elephant Island, Antarctica, to South Georgia Island, where they scaled its peaks "“ an expedition undertaken by Shackleton after his original ship The Endurance was crushed by pack ice and sank.
Discovery Networks has commissioned a three-part adventure series called "Endurance in the Wake of Shackleton", to follow Tim's team, enabling us to share the story of our journey, raise awareness of global environmental challenges and learn from Shackleton's legacy as a leader.
You can watch this great short film about the expedition: http://vimeo.com/48923718.

Arup's support team
Our team participated as sponsor crew aboard the Australis, the Epic support vessel, during the first stage of the expedition, as Tim and his team completed their preparations and "shake down" of their tiny wooden boat, the Alexandra Shackleton, a replica of Shackleton's James Caird. The Australis Based is a steel hulled, fully rigged motor sailor, carrying a comprehensive range of safety, operational and navigational equipment. You can see more about her here: http://www.ocean-expeditions.com/the-fleet/australis/. We visited many incredible places in the Antarctic Peninsula, including King George and Deception Islands, Paradise Bay, Lemaire Channel, making landfall several times to get a feel for what Shackleton's men experienced.
As part of the expedition agenda, I'll be co-delivering a custom-designed leadership experience for Arup clients and staff inspired by Shackleton's own approach, which enabled him to lead his crew of 27 men for 19 months across treacherous ice, through uncharted waters, and over murderous mountains to safety.
We are also raising funds to support the leading environmental charity Fauna & Flora International (FFI). You can find out more about FFI here: http://www.fauna-flora.org/.
Our team will engage in a programme of follow up activities after the voyage, to build, maintain and share the legacy of the Shackleton Epic expedition. These actions will help raise global awareness of the impacts of climate change and the consequences for our natural environment.

Why do I need to fund raise?
Our team must pay for our berths on the Australis, at a reduced rate with the benefit of Arup sponsorship. Including my return flights to the point of embarkation, the cost of the voyage is around $15,000. I will also be taking leave without pay for the 4 weeks of the journey.

What can I offer?
If you will sponsor my participation in the Shackleton Epic, I will ensure you can follow the progress of the expedition online via Facebook and LinkedIn. You will be able to read and watch the story of our support team's experiences and the progress of Tim and his brave (and slightly crazy!) crew aboard the Alexandra Shackleton. We will also create opportunities for you to get involved in activities surrounding the launch of the film of the Epic expedition and other events planned to highlight the successful completion of this amazing voyage. Your support is critical and if you can help make this journey possible for me I will be forever grateful.
