Changing the Odds

Terence is a local pastor who volunteers his time teaching high school students.  The national average is 10% of high school students make it into university level education.   Terence's students have achieved a success rate of 100%!  This transformation is unprecedented. Our goal is to help him and others like him achieve similar results throughout the nation.

Terence teaches at Maprik High School in Papua New Guinea.   Six years ago the Maprik High School principal was stymied by student vandalism and apathy.  Students scrawled graffiti on the school walls and threw stones on the corrugated iron roofing.  The principal gave Pastor Terence an opportunity to teach Religious Education in the high school,...Pastor Terence jumped at the opportunity.

Pastor Terence knew the students would need good biblical instruction if they were going to change.   A friend gave him a lead on getting some good teaching materials and he connected with Eric Schering of Pacific Island Ministries. He was given books that deal directly with the pressing social issues in PNG like Domestic Violence, Sorcery Killings, Polygamy and Land Disputes.  High school students in PNG are very interested in learning what the Word of God teaches on these very relevant issues in their culture.

Sixty percent of PNG women experience violence at the hands of men.   Witch hunts still happen. In some parts of the country older women accused of sorcery are killed by locals without evidence. Fighting over land can drag on for 5 or 10 years, causing the death toll to soar and schools to shut down.

We are not raising money to pay teachers or pastors.  We are raising funds to get excellent curriculum into the hands of passionate, impactful teachers who are waiting to challenge young people.

If volunteer teachers have resources to give their students, the likelihood of them making it into university goes up significantly. Books like Ten Hot Topics and Eleven More Hot Topics by Eric Schering are making a huge difference in the academic achievement of the students.

Please support us as we get this curriculum into the hands of the students.  $100,000 would provide for 25% of all high school students in PNG to get these books.  $200,000 would provide for 50% of the students.  Every dollar donated will go directly to purchasing books for students. Join us in training young, passionate, influential leaders for Papua New Guinea!
