Just the three of us - Vitaly, Denis, and Jan. In November of 2018 we started our journey together. We set out with a common goal to film a documentary movie showcasing a finite yet growing lifestyle, Aerial Sports: Skydiving, B.A.S.E Jumping, Paragliding, Hang Gliding, Speedflying, and Wingsuit flying. In the short months since we met we have managed to film nearly 700 flights/jumps in an extremely original way. A mix of traditional camera work and FPV (First Person View) drone videography, this will be a first in aerial sports photography, capturing these sports in a way never seen before. Our primary goal is to show not only the incredible joy these sports can bring, but also the pain and loss they have the potential to inflict, and our hope is by using experiences from professionals in these sports we can limit some of that risk. We have done all of this so far with only the time and money that we can manage through personal sacrifice and saving. We are now at a point where we need to ask for financial help to ensure the completion of this project. We will be using all donations to cover travel and event costs to film and interview the juniors and elders of aerial sports, to cover costs of post-production and to ensure that we can bring this original project to fruition.
A short synopsis and trailer for this project is included below.
“Above The Ground” a documentary movie, A combination of aerial extreme sports activities: Skydiving, BASE Jumping, Wingsuit Flying, Speed Flying, Hang Gliding, Paragliding, etc. Why we do them, the sacrifices that we are willing to make for them and why. The main objective for this project is to show the awesomeness of these sports, to underline the human passion for the sky and flying philosophy, and share the different limits we push to achieve the highest level of epicness we as humans are able to deal with. We will share incredible experiences, tell heart-breaking stories and discover the truth about the men and women who take part in extreme aerial sports. We show that there are no limits on human abilities. We explain what really drives us and what happens to your senses when you fly. We explain the feeling of “ego-death” and the truth of risk in extreme sports. We want people to see the real stories from real professional athletes, to be more aware of what they are doing, the risks they are taking on, and potentially bring more responsibility to the extreme sport they have chosen to do. These are not just fun sports. They have risk, and aerial sports are growing rapidly in popularity. Social media is partially to blame for this increase, and because we love these sports we have to love that, but it also is breeding an unsafe culture where some are working hard to appear superhero-esque. People are focusing on how they appear to others rather than flying ethics, the crazy camera shot to upload later, or the amount of likes they received on the last post. This unsafe culture is not worth it. Once you leave the ground the only true safe way back is through the experience earned with practice and discipline. Especially when you are the new flier or jumper, and you have not yet been faced with accidents or failures. So let’s avoid these toxic habits and cultures. Let’s make these sports safe and help our families feel comfortable that when we leave home to our local Drop zones (DZs) and Landing zones (LZs) for a weekend we can return without incident. The movie will contain stories of pro jumpers and fliers, legends of aerial sports, athletes who have faced and witnessed accidents and survived. Athletes who have lost friends or family and might give us an idea how these accidents could have been avoided. These stories will give you more information, better information, on how to best spend your life “Above the Ground” and how to stay alive. That is the goal of this movie, to make people aware that these sports have the potential to be the most rewarding part of your life. However, without proper thought and execution they can also take that life from you and from the ones who care for you.
