Theatre on a Mission

On the 28 July 2019 I began my journey of recovery. I had been struggling, in secret, with addiction problems for over 15 years. Problems with food, alcohol and illicit substances and a pursuit to remove myself as far away from the person I was, had almost cost me my life.

My biggest challenge was that at my core I was struggling with this inner deep feeling that there was something innately wrong with me and the more I tried to bury it the fiercer it got. I had convinced myself over time that the world was rejecting me and I would never be worthy of love or acceptance.  I had also assumed it was the worlds fault and not mine.

'Coming out" and putting my hand up for help, whilst one of the hardest things I have done has given me an opportunity to understand my part and begin to heal

To find faith.

To connect with others.

Over the past twelve months I have begun to gain a deeper awareness and understanding that the fear which has held me back for so long was actually doing more harm than exposing myself could ever do.

I have noticed, the more I share, the more I realise that I am not alone.  That there are so many others around the globe who think, feel and share this internal struggle, this black hole.  The more open we are and the more we talk about it, the less hold it  has on us and those around us.

By sharing my journey I pass on my gift, a hope that we can and do recover.

My Heart is Aching and no one can save me, is a one-woman, self-devised physical theatre production which I plan to show case at this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival in November.  Creating the show has been a ten-year journey. The creation symbolises facing fears, an acceptance of what I have and moving forward no matter how uncomfortable I am.  Putting myself out there despite what others might say.

It is my mission and hope that it will inspire others to do the same.

However, I cannot do it alone.

This GoFundMe is aimed to help me to fund the production and pay my collaborating partners.

The total cost of the production is as follows:

$2000 - Venue Hire
$1200 - Rehearsal Space (5 day intensive development)
$430 - Melbourne Fringe Registration
$560 - Advertising
$500 - Set & Costume Budget

My collaborating partners:
Josh Mitchell - Sound & Music Composer
Jennifer Arrlen Fergueson - Photography
Kyle Burbor-Hoffman - Audio Visual Design

Any surplus funds will go toward my continued plans to create ACHE - a performance company that creates work that inspires truth, promotes human connection and supports people to find their voice through dance and theatre.

In this current climate when we are feeling the effects of isolation, where mental health problems, anxiety and depression are amplified and  affecting us all, either you reading this or someone you know, - I hope to create connections, deeply and rawly relate and potentially inspire others in this intimate and heartfelt show.

I am so deeply grateful for anyone who supports my ambitions by donating funds, sharing my story or coming to see the show. Every little bit helps to create awareness around the importance of looking after our mental health,  the need to reach out if you need help  and the difficulties faced by those suffering with depression, anxiety and substance abuse.

It is also my wish that if you read this and you feel alone or know someone else who is struggling.  Reach out.

I will be forever grateful for the friends and family who reached out when I was at my worst.

Thank You.
