<div>O <strong>Xavier tem 4 anos</strong>, é o mais novo de quatro irmãos e é o menino mais feliz que conhecemos. Adora água, adora música e faz questão de estar no meio de tudo o que os manos fazem.

<div>O Xavi tem um<strong> atraso global do desenvolvimento psicomotor</strong>. Fizemos todos os exames que havia para fazer, passámos por consultas, internamentos e anos de investigação, e ninguém nos soube explicar porquê. A junta médica reconheceu-lhe <strong>80% de incapacidade</strong>. O corpo dele não lhe obedece com facilidade. Cada movimento que para nós é automático, para ele é uma conquista trabalhada.

<div>Mas <strong>o Xavi avança</strong>. Faz<strong> reabilitação intensiva em Guimarães</strong> algumas semanas por ano, e tem <strong>terapia da fala</strong>, <strong>terapia ocupacional</strong> e <strong>fisioterapia</strong> todas as semanas no colégio, o que tem mostrado resultados. Depois de um dos períodos de <strong>terapia intensiva</strong>, a escola escreveu, que ele passou a ter mais controlo das mãos, mais relação com os outros e mais interesse em explorar os brinquedos.

<div><strong>Senta-se sozinho durante cada vez mais tempo. </strong>Vira-se e procura sentar-se. Levanta a cabeça. Sorri a olhar para nós. Diz "mamã" e "papá", e é o som mais bonito que há cá em casa. <strong>Cada uma destas coisas custou meses de trabalho</strong>.

<div><strong>Nos primeiros anos, o cérebro de uma criança aprende com uma facilidade que depois não volta a ter.</strong> Quanto mais cedo se trabalha, mais ele responde. O Xavi tem 4 anos, e cada mês que passa não volta.

<div>Estamos a angariar 128 000 €. É o que custa o próximo passo do Xavi: a reabilitação e as terapias que ele já faz, um <strong>programa intensivo especializado no estrangeiro</strong>, com dois meses de terapia diária, e a viagem e a estadia para lá chegar. A plataforma desconta ainda uma pequena comissão a cada donativo, que já está contada neste valor.

<div>O Xavi é acompanhado em neuropediatria, em pediatria do desenvolvimento e em fisiatria no serviço público, e vai continuar a ser. <strong>O que procuramos por fora é a intensidade diária que não é comparticipada.</strong>

<div><strong>Xavier is 4 years old</strong>, the youngest of four siblings, and the happiest little boy we know. He loves water, he loves music, and he always wants to be right in the middle of everything his brothers are doing.

<div>Xavi has a <strong>global developmental delay affecting his psychomotor development</strong>. We have gone through every test available, countless appointments, hospital stays, and years of searching for answers, but no one has been able to tell us why. A medical board has officially recognized him as having an <strong>80% disability</strong>. His body does not always respond to him easily. Every movement that is automatic for us is something he has had to work incredibly hard to achieve.

<div><strong>But Xavi keeps moving forward.</strong> He undergoes <strong>intensive rehabilitation in Guimarães</strong>, Portugal, for several weeks each year. He also receives <strong>speech therapy</strong>, <strong>occupational therapy</strong>, and <strong>physical therapy </strong>every week at his school, and we are seeing results. After one of his intensive therapy periods, his school wrote that he had developed better control of his hands, more interaction with others, and a greater interest in exploring his toys.<strong> He can sit independently </strong>for longer and longer periods. He turns himself over and tries to sit up. He lifts his head. He smiles when he looks at us. He says “mama” and “dada,” and those are the most beautiful sounds in our home.<strong> Every one of these achievements has taken months of hard work</strong>.

<div><strong>During the first years of a child’s life, the brain has an incredible ability to learn and develop that becomes much harder to replicate later.</strong> The earlier we work with him, the more he responds. Xavi is 4 years old, and every month that passes is a month we can never get back. We are raising €128,000. This is what the next step in Xavi’s journey will cost: the rehabilitation and therapies he already receives, an <strong>intensive specialized rehabilitation program abroad</strong> involving two months of daily therapy, as well as the travel and accommodation needed to make it possible. The fundraising platform also deducts a small fee from each donation, which is already included in this amount.

<div>We are not promising a cure. But what we do know is this: <strong>When Xavi works, he progresses. And we want to give him every hour of rehabilitation we possibly can.</strong>

<div>Xavi continues to be followed by specialists in pediatric neurology, developmental pediatrics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation through the public healthcare system in Portugal, and he will continue to receive that care. <strong>What we are seeking outside the public system is the intensive, daily therapy that is not covered.</strong>
