Help Us Start Our Community Garden!

Donation protected
In light of COVID-19 and the current economic crisis, hundreds of thousands of people will face extreme challenges to daily life in the coming months. One of the biggest hurdles is food security, particularly for those who are at high risk of infection if exposed to COVID-19.

We are a small group of young professionals, college students, and community members who are committed to growing organic foods to provide for the Cleveland community. We plan to donate these foods to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, as well as to Community Meals CLE who deliver hot meals to those who are housebound once a week in Cleveland.

We plan to grow spinach, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, squash, and corn, with the potential to expand as we get more seeds and the weather gets warmer.

This funding will be used to:
-construct 10 raised-bed gardens using treated lumber ($600)
-provide tools and seeds for tilling, construction, and growing ($200)
-transport donated manure from local farms ($100)
-Various other costs such as plastic sheeting for bed covers, water for irrigation, and transportation out to our grow site each week ($100+)

This initial funding will help get us off the ground, and if we can raise more than our requested funding, we can purchase and care for chickens to provide fresh eggs to community members as well. The goal for adding chickens is $1200, and for every $100 over that we can purchase another chicken. For each donation of $100 once we reach that $1200 mark, we will name a chicken after you or use a different name of the donor's choice. This is to honor the donor's commitment to food security and community solidarity!

In addition to this, extra funding beyond the initial $1,000 will be used to build smaller gardens for volunteers. We will build their raised-bed garden, supply them with seeds and tools, and leave them with instructions for how to tend to their garden throughout the growing season. This adds to our available land without crowding private property, and allowing a larger network of volunteers to help us provide food for the community.

Finally, we want to be completely transparent. We are young people, either working to finish our degrees or struggling to find work in this time of crisis. This is something we can do, as able-bodied young people, to help our community as best we can. This funding is vital to providing fresh, organic vegetables to Cleveland's community for months to come, to ensure that even with no job prospects, no government support, and no money, community members can still have fresh produce and reliable food sources.

Please share, and donate if you are able! It would mean the world to us.

Thank you!
