On September 28, 2018, Terrie Alexander lost her battle with bile duct cancer, but not before being recognized for her courageous fight against substance use disorders. Thankfully, Terrie was able to join family, friends and colleagues for a celebration of her amazing life and her 22 years in recovery from substance abuse.
Terrie grew up not far from “The Corner”, the infamous open-air drug market amidst the poverty of West Baltimore. She became addicted to substances, but repeatedly failed at rehabilitation. After becoming pregnant with her son, Brian Dickerson, Terrie was fighting for her life and the wellbeing of her son at Johns Hopkins’ Center for Addiction and Pregnancy (CAP). Once Brian was born healthy and drug-free in 1996, Terrie was determined to make a significant change in her life. Focused on helping others who were suffering as she had, Terrie earned degrees in addiction counseling and mental health technology from Baltimore City Community College, completed more than 400 hours of internships at CAP, and subsequently obtained her Master’s degree in Social Work while working as a counselor and Manager of the REACH Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Following in his mother's footsteps, Brian is pursuing his education in social work to help others who struggle with substance use disorders and support their road to recovery as his mother id throughout her career. Brian also volunteers his time at a Baltimore City program working with children with grief and loss issues. In honor of Terrie's memory, please consider making a contribution to help Brian pay for his education and training to become a social worker.
