I hope you will take a moment to read this message. Deborah Scott has been a dear and cherished friend of mine for more than 30 years. She was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Being Stage I, we were hopeful the treatment plan would be very minimal. Unfortunately, this type of breast cancer is more aggressive and Deb will be undergoing 4 Chemotherapy treatments as well at 5-6 weeks of Radiation. Deb also suffered a stroke 1 month after she had the lump removed which set her back and necessitated her missing work and having to use the majority of her sick time. Fortunately, she has good medical insurance that will cover most expenses. The downfall is her co-pays which are $50 a visit for Dr's, chemo treatments and radiation. There is a maximum out of pocket cost of $6200 before everything will be covered 100%. These copays and other expenses already exceed $1000. When radiation begins, Deb will be going for 5-6 weeks, 5 days a week. You can easily do the math and see that alone will be $1500. The first round of chemo was much harder than expected and my friend was very ill for several days. It is inevitable that she will need to miss work after these treatments. I'm concerned she will push herself to go to work when she really needs to be healing. Deb has always been a nurturer and caregiver to so many others.
