We are heartbroken and devastated to share the news that Miles died tonight. His illness progressed much too rapidly for any treatment to be effective. We are comforted by the fact that he did not suffer for long and take solace in knowing that he lived a wonderful life. We loved him every day and we did the best we could to give him an exciting and interesting life. We will cherish the memories we made with him.
If you have made a donation for his treatment and would like it back, we will return it to you no questions asked. Otherwise we will use the money to pay for the treatment he did receive and donate any excess to a deserving animal charity in his honor.
Thank you to to everyone who had wished him well, and to the doctors and veterinary staff who worked on him. We know you worked to your fullest extent to try and save him.
Where we go from here is unclear. But together with our friends and families we will work through this sudden and unexpected loss. Our grief and pain is real, but so is our gratitude for the incredible time we had with him.

It was a cold, snowy night a little over three and a half years ago when we adopted Miles from a local rescue organization. We tucked the little puppy with the one pointy ear into a blanket and brought him home. We worked through the new puppy struggles and after the initial adjustment we realized what a smart, sweet and happy dog we had. It didn't take long for him to become a major part of our family and lives.
Miles loves to be in the woods, run wild in our field, chase squirrels, snuggle under blankets, do tricks, and of course loves treats.
Two days ago he was a happy and seemingly healthy dog, running and playing and eating and drinking like normal.
This morning everything changed very abruptly. He was hot to the touch, lethargic and had no appetite; we suspected a minor flu. We took him to the vet just in case, thinking that we were being overly cautious, and were soon confronted with a very different reality.
Miles' blood work revealed a white blood cell count so low that it didn't even register, same with his platelet count. He had a fever over 106 degrees.
He isn't clotting, isn't able to fight infections and the anemia has left him exhausted.
He is at our regional animal emergency hospital now. The doctors don't yet know what is causing the illness, and are doing everything they can to treat his symptoms and improve his blood work. It is a rare case and the doctors hope to know more soon.
We are devastated by this turn of events. We have had struggles along the way as we work to start our family and farm, but Miles has always been a constant source of joy for us. He is a young dog and was previously healthy and we want to do everything possible to make him better. The staff at the hospital are doing what they can to help him but the hospital stay, lab tests, blood transfusions, antibiotics and other associated costs are much higher than we are able to cover. Please, if you can, help us pay to treat our dog.
