Help Preserve the Memory of the Portnoy Brothers

Our great-grandfathers, brothers Menashe (Mikhail) and Yankel (Yakov) Portnoy, walked from their small village in Khotyn, Romania, to the Soviet Union in the early 1940s while escaping the Nazis. They left the only home they had ever known behind to preserve the most sacred thing in Judaism – their lives. After surviving the war, the two brothers established themselves as the premier tailors in Rostov-on-Don, a then small, provincial but charming city in Russia’s Southern Region.

At the time, Soviet society was generally prejudiced against Jews, as such bias was in line with local communist beliefs. Yet, despite the hurled insults and thrown rocks accompanying their journey to the Rostov synagogue, Menashe and Yankel still visited and prayed there frequently. During the brothers’ long, and at times arduous, but nevertheless illustrious and memorable involvement with the synagogue, Yankel served as its Cantor, and Menashe as a Gabbai. Between the two of them, Menashe and Yankel managed all of the activities, including conducting high holiday events, purchasing food for their peers, delivering Matza to families on Pesach, and organizing all community events. Up until the brothers’ emigration in the early 1990s, Menashe and Yankel’s willpower kept the synagogue alive through an era where almost no Jews dared to practice their religion publicly out of fear of retribution.

The synagogue, still standing today, is a testament to the perseverance of the strong leaders like Menashe and Yakov, grounding themselves in their Jewish roots. All this took place during continued State-sanctioned adversity, faced by many generations of Jews before them. The families of the Portnoy brothers and the congregation would like to commemorate them with a monument (shown in the first picture) inside of the synagogue in their hometown of Rostov, documenting their hard work and selfless efforts to safeguard their faith.

Please donate to our fundraiser, share this post, and help us preserve the legacy of these two incredible brothers and their story of the enduring Jewish spirit. Any amount helps. Thank you!
