the big walk

I grew up in the middle of kansas, looking out across the wide horizon and wondered what it would be like to just start walking. Now, many years and miles of walking on trails later, I still wonder, I wonder about who is else is out there and what stories they have to tell, and what stories does the land have to share.

I firmly believe that the more we talk about our love for the land and water, the  more empathy we will build. The more empathy we are able to build for one another, the more we will want to protect the land, water, air, and one another.

But how and where to start? Years of activism has tought me that any change has to start with myself, and with the  tools I have, then go from there. So i'll start with myself here in Portland, OR with the best tool I have for getting around, my own two feet.

And  I will just keep walking, only instead of walking across the country on roads and such, I want to utilize the wilderness trail systems where others are also walking, working, living, and strike up some conversations.

I will start to gather and collect stories to share with you that, hopefully, inspire you to have more conversations with people and animals (hello fellow vegans!) in wilderness or urban landscapes.

To be honest, I'm not sure all the ways I will share the stories. I know I will utilize my current blog (Queer Vegan Adventures ), zines, photos, campfire stories, and whatever other tools and skills I develop out there.

One reason I have asking for support is I know that I can not do this without community support. That when the days are tough and I feel alone, that there is a whole community out there cheering me on that I am accountable to. Also, I will need to replace gear as i work my way  around the country and i want to be able to use  things made by small local (wherever I am at) folks not just big box store stuff. I want to be able to continue to follow my values and ethics and that might be slightly more challenging on the trail, so I may need to locate that small vegan store or co-op to ship me some food, or that small clothing maker in colorado to send me a new shirt when mine is full of holes (if you know any of these folks send me  their info!).

For good reasons, this might be a little more expensive, but this is another form of community building that I believe is important. Yes, I will be purchasing things in those small remote towns I walk through too....like a bed, shower, and hot (or cold) beverage while I plug into the internet to tell you a story or send you a picture.   I know I will have to stop and work from time-to-time, but I hope to be able to spend the first year just focused on walking, eating, and listening.

Othere ways you can lend suport:

1) go for a walk alone and sit by a stream
2) eat a vegan meal or snack
3)share your adventures with others
4)share this adventure

thanks!
