Well it comes to a point in life where decisions and changes must be made. Some of you may know that Carol has lost her job due to Luke’s care back in January. Since then Richard has been trying to reestablish his business after so many days in the hospital, and on top of that his deal with La fitness ended with no warning. Richard has been working on his business during the day and doing Uber from afternoon until 3 am most days, and on top of that Richard and Carol do not have health insurance, bikes were sold, and all the cuts possible and impossible were made. Luke requires a bit of care as you may know. The home health nursing has not being the best (we have one nurse only 3 times per week 9-4) therefore Carol stays home and does most of Luke’s care and Richard works from home as much as possible, but lately he has been out for long periods of time with Uber.

Since March we have been researching for solutions. We have talked to many parents, social workers lawyers etc, and we couldn’t find in Florida a solution to be able to live off only one income. After so much research we found out that Colorado has a program that actually pays one of the parents to take care of Luke as a CNA (certified nurse assistant). Plus, Colorado also has a Medicaid Waiver Program, that Luke could be eligible for right away, which in Florida has a 7-10 years waiting list to get in.

We are still working on details and planning everything, and we are thinking about a city close to Denver (where they have a great Children’s Hospital).  As you can imagine it takes a lot of planning to move to another state far away, let alone with a child with so many complex details to coordinate, so it will take us a few months, but we want to be there by mid/2018 at the latest. Our plan is to leave after Rich does the Paddling for Strength, which we might make it earlier by feb/march.

You may or may not know that we moved to Florida from Brazil almost 10 years ago, and we built ourselves up with a lot of sweat and positivity. We built our business and we were able to live a great life here, we had great clients, and we made amazing friends and we did our best to always serve the community the best way possible. After our son Luke was born, our world just became better, more amazing, more exciting, but it also collapsed financially, little by little, as we dedicate ourselves almost entirely to Luke’s care and improvements. We can’t describe how grateful we are for all the support we received throughout our entire journey, and we are here today to ask for one more help.  Please know that asking for help is not something easy for us, we both grew up being as independent as possible from our parents, and when we moved here we both did every and anything to survive at first. But now that we have Luke, we are tied with only one income.

Moving to a place where Carol can get an income for being Luke’s caregiver is the best solution we found to get back on our feet and go from there. We are here to kindly ask for your help, so we can move to Colorado to be able to continue to provide Luke a good quality life.
