Beat Breast Cancer

I’m running a half marathon. Wait…. what? Yeah me, the least active girl you know.

But something’s gotta give.

My name is Jaclyn and I am a middle school science teacher in New Jersey. My road to get to this career wasn’t exactly ‘direct’ but each and every bumpy experience lead me to where I needed to be.

When I was in middle school I received the most heart-wrenching news a girl could hear. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. We were assured by doctors over and over that she was the poster patient for a success story. Caught early, receiving the best treatment available, and positively putting up a fight. My mom always told us she had to find the positive in the negative ‘for her 3 girls’ and show us that there is good that can come from the bad hands that are dealt. She no doubt fought with every ounce of her being up until our tragic loss on April 23, 2008.

I received a Bachelors in Exercise Science and was hired right out of college as a personal trainer for breast cancer survivors. Theoretically, this was a dream job - helping others the way I couldn’t help my mom. Unfortunately, it was just a constant reminder of how I couldn’t help my mom. I needed to make a change. The people whom helped me through my mom’s battle were my high school teachers.

So here I am, 10 years later, a teacher influenced by a support system I had during my dark days. Then I get hit with a curveball: my ‘step mama’ was diagnosed in early 2018 with stage 4 breast cancer with, the outcome of her diagnosis, minimal treatment options for her case.

But guess what? We’re here rocking through it, receiving chemo and radiation, BEATING cancer just in time for her to experience my Wedding day!

Then what? I’m hit again. If I know one thing for certain, it’s that cancer does not discriminate. A former co-worker, close friend, and cherished young mommy was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 24 years old. Although caught early and being treated, it is still a wake up call that there are WAY too many people being affected by this disease. Having ONE person close to you affected is too many, but THREE?

Something’s gotta give. We have to do something.

With all of these experiences, I wish to raise money through the 2018 Halloween Half Marathon in Morristown, NJ, in honor of those who lost, survived, or continue to battle breast cancer. I have chosen to send all funds raised to a private organization. Your donations will not only motivate me through training, but will be received by someone experiencing similar circumstances in need!
