My name is Wilner Francois I'm the Dad
along with my wife Laelda have Six Children one of them is our handsome looking son Wilner Timothee Francois Jr. We call him Timo.
On a Sunday afternoon, our 13 year old son Timo was complaining of severe non stop headache, after he had 2 Tylenol, the headache had not gotten better but in fact worse. Finally we resolved to take him to the emergency room where they ran several tests before the doctor came back into the room with news none was anticipating. Timo has Aplastic Anemia.
When the doctor told us that our son was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, we were shocked, but we still did not understand what Aplastic Anemia was.
In case you are also unaware of what Aplastic Anemia Is this is a brief overview.
Aplastic Anemia is a rare disease in which the bone marrow and the hematopoietic stem cells that reside there are damaged. This causes a deficiency of all three blood cell types (pancytopenia): red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells (leukopenia), and platelets(thrombocytopenia). Aplastic refers to inability of the stem cells to generate mature blood cells.
It is most prevalent in people in their teens and twenties, but is also common among the elderly. It can be caused by heredity, immune disease, or exposure to chemicals, drugs, or radiation. However, in about half the cases, the cause is unknown. Timo cause is unknown.
The definitive diagnosis is done by a very painful bone marrow biopsy; normal bone marrow has 30%-70% blood stem cells, but in aplastic anemia, these cells are mostly gone and replaced by fat.
Timo's First treatment started right away at age 13.
Now 7 years later still fighting this horrible diagnosis at age 20 Timo is in the hospital getting ready to go through the process of getting a bone marrow transplant. It is a hard lengthy process that requires quite a number of strong medications and chemo therapy before the stem cells can be infused in his body.
My Wife Laelda is going to be his Stem Cell donor during this procedure as she is the closest match in our family.
Watching our son going through this process is painful. But the finacial burden is also starting to take it's toll. A 45 minute drive each way to the Hospital everyday, medications, specialty foods and procedures, 1 of which cost $45,000 alone.
Over the last 7 years we have had to learn as a family to sacrifice family vacations, Trips to see friends and many other more frivolous things in order to make ends meet. But Our Faith & Friends support has never waivered and that has made us able to be strong for him.
