Greetings all,
Some of you may be aware that ever since I fled domestic violence years ago and became a newly arrived-single mother in Canada, I have been struggling financially. Despite these difficulties, I was always able to meet my daughter's and my own basic needs.
More recently, new challenges brought on by the pandemic have jeopardized the most basic need of all. The need to remain housed.
In 2020, the company I was working for closed its office in Canada due to COVID, just as my career in hospitality and tourism was beginning to look promising.
At that point, I was at my lowest. Since then, I've been working to ensure that I have greater support for myself so that I can go forward despite all the hardship and suffering I've experienced in my life. I worked hard to find a new job, which I am now employed at. I did, however, accrue a large debt during the months I was between jobs.
I now face eviction and imminent homelessness due to these arrears, the inflation affecting all living expenses, and my precarious finances since immigrating to Canada. I fought my case and this eviction at the hearing with the landlord, and the judge, given my situation, granted me the opportunity to stay in my apartment with an aggressive payment plan. I now have 10 days to raise the first half of these funds. For more details, please keep reading, I break down exactly what the funds will be used for down below.
A few key facts about my situation:
- I am the single provider of both the lease and the income. No one else can fulfill or assist me in fulfilling these essential duties.
- I currently rent a rent-controlled apartment. My rent is less than what is now being paid for a comparable apartment because of changes in the rental market since the pandemic. Keeping my lease in place is the most cost-effective and safest approach to stabilizing my housing and will also allow me to maintain my employment contract because my current job is entirely remote.
- Maintaining my housing is critical to my health. My physical and mental health have greatly suffered as a result of the ongoing stress of the past few years alone. Furthermore, because of my ongoing therapy for an injury, I sustained in 2019, all my medical care is located close to my home. I need time to finish all of this before I can think about and make long-term plans for the future.
- I have exhausted every other possible resource before launching this campaign. This eviction proceeding is putting me at imminent risk for homelessness. I have no family support to aid me with a new lease or to help with a place to stay. I must fight this eviction by paying the arrears and future payments to my landlord and preserve my employment to get back on track with my career, housing and future.
This is what your GFM donations will be used for:
All funds raised will go to my landlord. Firstly, and urgently, the funds raised will go toward paying my rental arrears. Secondly, the funds will help supplement my salary so that I can secure my rent payments for the next year. This will give me time to recover my health, focus on increasing my income by getting back on my career path, and plan my next steps to stabilize myself and move on from these catastrophic circumstances.
How you can help
