Kelly’s fight against cancer

Donation protected
Kelly – The first word that a lot of people would think is selfless.

Selfless – Adjective

“Concerns more with the needs and wishes of others than with one’s own; unselfish’.

People who know Kelly would also describe her as bubbly, devoted and energetic.  She is always putting others before herself.

To explain the current circumstances surrounding Kelly’s health, she has made the following announcement to the community:

“Many of you will be aware that in August 2019 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer which has spread to my liver and lungs. I had surgery within weeks to remove the tumour in my bowel and was fortunate that I did not require a bag.

The lung and liver tumours are inoperable and I have been doing chemotherapy to try and manage them since September 2019.  Since then I have new bone tumours in C1, L1, my humorous and my sternum.

To look at me you would never guess! (OK I can’t move my head real well and have reduced body rotation) The only visual changes are the partial loss of hair and weight gain (bloody steroid treatments) and a reduced pace at which I tackle things. Ok the brain doesn’t always function at it’s best… Chemotherapy takes it’s toll, and some weeks are easier than others.

I am LIVING!!!I refuse to give up any earlier than I have to and I am so grateful to those who have continued to support my continued participation in AFL, particularly those at Broadbeach Cats it really makes a huge difference on a daily basis.

Recently my oncologist has suggested that I probably only have 12 months (give or take) before my liver gives up on me, and that will be my end. Obviously in my normal style I intend to push that as far as I possibly can, however I need to be realistic. No one lives forever. However there is a new trial coming up in Brisbane in 6 months that I might be eligible for…

The next 12 months for me are about living every day that I can, making memories, guiding my beautiful girls to grow up to be the best that they possibly can, and setting Ron and the girls up as best as possible before life after the fact (this is how I refer to my death)

There are no secrets, I am happy for anyone to know so feel free to share with those you think may want to know. If you have questions, ask! My response will be honest but may have to wait for me to have the time and headspace to reply.

Other than that it’s life as best we can around here”

Prior to Kelly’s diagnosis, she worked hard.  Like actual hard core physical labour, digging holes (with a shovel! None of this post hole digger business!!) for her fencing business.  Since Kelly was diagnosed, she has had to hang up the tools and take a step back from the physical work to focus on healing.  Kelly’s husband Ron has continued to work the tools and became the sole provider for the family.

When I have asked Kelly what she would like to achieve she stated that her youngest daughter Jordi has never been on a plane in her 11 years of life. Kelly is set on providing this experience for her while she still can.

Kelly’s home is also in desperate need of repairs including the roof requiring urgent attention due to a manufacturing fault of the roof tiles. Unfortunately, the repairs are not covered under home insurance.  This is one of Kelly’s main priorities as she would like her family to have a roof over their head after the fact (as Kelly likes to refer to it). Kelly has been quoted with a figure around $20,000 for the roof to be repaired.

Kelly is a devoted member of the Gold Coasts AFL community and has never missed a GC Suns home game! Seriously, she plans her treatments around home games! Kelly also plans her treatments around her own daughters’ football, driving from one end of the coast to another pouring her time and energy into creating a healthy girls/women’s AFL community for her daughters.

I know that Kelly would be grateful and appreciate any support that is provided and would use what is raised to assist with home repairs, take her family on their first plane flight and take time with her family and not have to stress.
