Writing Academy- Basic Writing and Study Skills

Teen Scene Writing Academy

The Writing Academy is designed to complement the mission of Teen Scene, Inc.,* which is to promote writing and business skills among teens. The Academy will offer the opportunity to learn the joy and confidence of writing. We will work to build students' confidence, competence, and self-esteem in their ability to communicate in writing and improve retained knowledge.
Initially, we will focus on two main topics - Basic Writing Skills and Study Skills. Programs will be available for public, private, Faith-Based, or homeschool students in grades 7-12. Classes will be held at the Leland or Bolivia campus of Brunswick Community College beginning the fall of 2021.
Your help is needed to help us make these classes free for the students. That is an important element to make sure all students who want to attend can attend. We are budgeting at a rate of $15 per hour or $75 per week, per child, to cover our costs. Each class will have a maximum of 6 students, to maximize the learning process.
The costs for Teen Scene, Inc. will include books, supplies, marketing, printing, and scholarship funds. Teen Scene, Inc. awards scholarships annually to teens who have demonstrated excellence in participating in Teen Scene programs. The goal of $10,000 would pay the budgeted cost of 20 of these classes.
We know from experience that we can make a difference in the students' lives. However, this program can only be successful with the support of individual contributions, local educators, and the business community.
The Writing Academy Summer Camp is unique because students will also have the opportunity to put their newfound skills to work by writing for The Teen Scene. Experience has shown that immediate positive feedback from newly learned skills is the best reinforcer for those new skills. We are excited about this new program and want this to be a fun experience.
This program has the support of the Brunswick Community College, Brunswick County Arts Council, and the North Carolina Arts Council.

* Teen Scene, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that publishes the free monthly local newspapers Cape Fear Voices and The Teen Scene.

There simply is no occupation where writing is not essential. We think you should get good at it now instead of waiting to learn on the job.
