Wreck Bay Water Relief

Donation protected
Urgent call for water relief!

- The Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community currently has no access to fresh tap water.
- The water ways in the local area, including the catchment zone, bore water and Lake Windermere which feeds the towns water supply, have been contaminated with PFAS.
- You can help by donating funds to purchase water and sharing this campaign

I am calling for donations for the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community as they currently have no access to uncontaminated tap water.
Donations will be used to purchase bottled water which will be distributed to the Wreck Bay Community.

WHAT IS PFAS:

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemicals that have previously been used in firefighting, as well as having other industrial uses.
PFAS can spread through dust particles and waterways and remain in the local ecosystem for years until it finally breaks down.
When ingested or absorbed through the skin, PFAS can remain in your body for up to 7 years. It has a wide range of side effects such as cancer, developmental issues and birth defects, liver damage, thyroid disease, sterility, and hormone suppression. It can aggravate pre-existing conditions such as eczema and asthma and rashes and skin conditions can develop just from showering in contaminated water a few times each week.
Water cannot be treated through boiling, and most standard home water filters will have little to no effect on PFAS levels.

BACKGROUND:

The local Navy Base has allowed PFAS pollution to seep into the local waterways.
This includes the water table, Lake Windermere (the towns water supply), local creeks and rivers, and both Wreck Bay and Jervis Bay.
Not only is the towns tap water and bore water now contaminated, but because of the spreading contamination the local community has also suffered a devastating cultural lose in the form of access to traditional sources of food, with the local seafood, wildlife, and vegetation containing levels of PFAS well above the recommended consumption levels.
