If you know Khloe, you know she is a brave, kind, loving, smart and strong 9 year old (now 11 years old). She is supported by her loving parents; Lloyd and LaWanda Cox, her sister Nya aged 14 and brother Manny 11. She recently finished out a strong school year at Vincent Farm Elementary School completing the 3rd grade. She enjoys arts and crafts and playing Roblox. However, Khloe's true passion is gymnastics. Just ask her and she will tell you “gymnastics is my life!” In fact, Khloe met several milestone accomplishments including advancing from a level 1 to a level 2 gymnast @ her gym, BC Gymnastics in White Marsh, Maryland. She also received the “Super Strength Club” award which is a feat consisting of 12 pull ups, 11 leg lifts and 50 MILITARY PUSH UPS! Khloe is well on her way to fulfilling a dream of becoming an Artistic Gymnast just like her idol Olympic Gold Medalist Simone Biles.

On a Wednesday following the first gymnastic practice of her newly achieved level 2 stature, Khloe developed a stomach ache accompanied by fever and nausea.  A visit to the doctor's office concluded that she had a virus. However, her condition continue to worsen the next two days. Her temperature increased and her throat became sore. Loss of appetite was worrisome and her ability to take fluids became a struggle.  A second trip to the doctor was in turn. Tests for strep and flu each came back negative.  After an exam of her abdomen, the doctor suggested Khloe had a stomach virus and advised the virus will need to run its course. It’s now Sunday and her fever has spiked. Khloe is ailing and has become indisposed from her illness. Sensing this is more than a virus, Khloe’s parents rushed her to the E.R.  An examination and ultrasound scan of her abdomen revealed her liver was enlarged, with the presence of lesions. Khloe was transferred to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), in downtown Baltimore, Maryland where she was admitted for two weeks.  A biopsy of the liver was performed and the results provided her parents with devastating news. The results are unthinkable, unspeakable and brought forth unimaginable heartache. In the span of one day, life as the Cox family knew it had changed forever! Khloe has CANCER. Her parents wonder how could this be? Khloe has never missed a scheduled doctor's appointment and was current with all her immunizations.  All things Khloe likes to do were put on hold. No flipping. No jumping. No bike ridding. No amusement park rides.  All actions or activity capable of being detrimental to her liver has come to a screeching halt. Worst of all for Khloe, NO GYMNASTICS!

Khloe has been diagnosed with a type of cancer known as a Neuroendocrine Tumor, which is a cancer primarily found in men 60 years of age and older. The cancer is very uncommon in children. Khloe's doctor suspects she may have been a carrier of the cancer 4 or 5 years prior to being diagnosed. The tumor originated in her pancreas and spread, significantly affecting her liver.  She frequently experiences mild abdomen discomfort however usually endures without need of pain medication.

The road ahead will be a grueling and painful journey. It will be a path filled with the anxiety of surgery, intensive treatments and immense healing.  Although Khloe has a very serious and frightening medical condition she remains positive and in complete control of her treatment. Khloe is extremely optimistic and is eagerly anticipating getting well. She is motivated to get through this journey in order to return back to what she loves most,  GYMNASTICS.

Call it intuition or perhaps an Angel’s guidance that led to Khloe’s suggestion of a viable option of care for her diagnosis.  After meeting countless amazing doctors and an overwhelming amount of consultation between the doctors' offices located in Maryland and in Iowa, the census was to treat the cancer via IV Radiotherapy. The Radiotherapy treatment was scheduled to take place in Iowa beginning the second week of July 2018. Khloe woke one morning and said “Mom, instead of going through all the therapy, why don’t they just give me a new liver?” That morning a call to the doctor in Iowa was made to share Khloe’s suggestion. The doctor replied to the suggestion saying,  “That’s a valid point. Let’s hold off on the IV Radiotherapy until we have a consultation with the transplant doctors to determine what they would like to do first.” As a result of Khloe’s vision and active role in her medical care, she is currently engaged in pre-qualification procedures of being listed in UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) for an organ transplant!

Khloe currently receives Octreotide injections once a month (down from receiving injections twice daily!) Once an organ is identified and matched, Khloe will be hospitalized for approximately 3 weeks following the transplant procedure. Once released from the hospital, she will be required to have weekly follow up appointments for an extended period of time. Additionally, if indicated, IV Radiotherapy treatments may be administered once every 6 weeks for a total of three treatments if necessary in Iowa.

Khloe has made a tough choice and is in for the battle of her life. It is difficult to predict the twists and turns of this Journey or how long it will take to complete. Mom, Dad, Sister and Brother will help Khloe fight for recovery however, more help is needed. Already this family's fight has impacted and inspired others to provide support, which has allowed the family to remain optimistic and channel their energies toward supporting Khloe.

You too can help further alleviate their worry of financial strain and ease their stress during this difficult time. Only a portion of their medical costs are covered by their insurance. However, additional monetary assistance is needed for various uncovered expenses associated with Khloe's care. As a new part time employee, mom was denied FMLA because she has not been able to work the required 1250 hours in a twelve-month period to qualify for the benefit. Her co-workers are uniting and generously willing to donate some of their time to allow for her to have a partial leave of absence to be available for Khloe's care.  This too will enable Mom and Dad to be by Khloe's side together during her treatments.  Additional costs may include, but are not limited to copays, travel and lodging accommodations.

If you have ever known or currently have a loved one with cancer, Khloe’s journey will resonate with you. Would you please consider helping them with their endeavor? If you know anyone else who would like to help support this incredible journey, please share this page with them. You can help provide renewed hope and truly demonstrate the heart of giving. The family would be sincerely grateful for your support towards Khloe's Journey! Please help...
