Worthy of Love - Monthly Skid Row Birthday Parties

Donation protected
Every final Thursday of the month, there’s a big birthday party for all kids living on Skid Row. We throw that party, and we haven’t missed a month since January of 2013.

Skid Row is the area in Los Angeles where most people experiencing homelessness gather. There are hundreds of kids seeking shelter within the area, and the number of kids in shelters goes up drastically during the summer months when it becomes too hot to sleep in a car.

Every month, we need to raise around $6,000 to throw our Skid Row birthday party. It costs about $20 per child.

Our birthday parties are about so much more than a birthday; they are about dignity for someone who might really be struggling with feeling worthy and loved. At one birthday party, I spoke with a young girl who didn’t know for sure how old she was; she didn’t know the year she had been born. That’s why everyone's birthday is celebrated, even if it's not their birth month.

Sometimes we have awesome companies sponsor a month or part of a month, and they will bring employees to help staff the event. Any time we raise extra funds, we use it to make the party extra awesome - like getting a llama from a petting zoo!

At my day job, I plan a few birthday parties per week for the wealthiest kids in Los Angeles. The cost of one of their birthday parties could host Worthy of Love’s monthly group birthday party. My husband and I run Worthy of Love on the side and love the way we can leverage the know-how from our day jobs into bringing a little bit of fun and love to kids who need it.

We recently had the opportunity to bus the kids from Skid Row to Dodger stadium for a birthday party at the park on Jackie Robinson’s birthday! Though the Dodgers organization did cover significant parts of the event, things like this are extra pricey, and it’s not something we can do regularly at this point.

Our long-term goals include:
 - Keeping our monthly birthdays going consistently
 - Being able to host events with every baseball team in their stadiums across the US
 - Perhaps being able to operationalize Worthy of Love more, with my husband and I taking a salary and bringing on staff

Will you help continue to throw these birthday parties and support our long-term goals? Please donate generously to support kids who are worthy of love, and share this page with people you think might be inspired.

Want to go beyond donating just once? Set a reminder in your phone to visit this page on your birth day each month, and commit to giving monthly
(and hopefully automatic recurring donations will be available here soon).
