Thank you for taking the time to learn about my fund raiser. I have been selected to represent the United States on the 2018 Womens Masters Field Hockey Team in the World Cup which takes place in Terresa, Spain from July 27-August 5, 2018.
Many if you know my story, some do not....
Playing for team USA has always been a lifelong dream I desired to have. I’ve been involved with Field Hockey since my freshman year in HS where I first learned to love the sport. I went on to play at the Division 1 level in college and then my dreams of playing further came to a fast halt. I became very ill and very close to death (actually was gone for a short time), but fought my way back to full strength and health.
I then became the Mother of 4 children, 3 of which have a rare genetic disorder called BORS syndrome. There is not a lot of research in the United States for individuals who suffer from BORS, so treatment and recommendations are few and far between. To date, one of my children presents with the most characteristics of this rare and sometimes fatal disease. We have spent countless hours, days and weeks in and out of the hospital, but I’m happy to report with monthly treatment, most of his illness is under control. Much needs to be learned as the disease continues to manifest in different ways.
As a now single Mom to 4 children, field hockey became my passion once again and a way to give something back and help me as we all go through this journey together. I have been coaching for 25 years and don’t plan on stopping any time soon! The joy it brings for me to see young athletes find the same passion is so rewarding. Being on Team USA helps me not only to continue my passion, but help to bring that passion to the thousands of young athletes I coach and hopefully give back to Field Hockey part of what it’s given to me!!
Being on the team is 100% self-funded. There is the cost of training, travel, event, kit, lodging....100%. I’m addition, I work as an independent contractor so no vacation or sick days for me...timed missed at work is money not earned. I work 4-6 jobs yearly to support my family, with medical bills and needs, unfortunately I cannot support this trip without your help.
