Working Towards Improved Health
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kathy Mendall and I am fundraising for my fiance JohnMark Baburka. Mark is retired from the FDNY, has multiple sclerosis and uses a motorized wheelchair for his primary mode of transportation. He has personal care assistants who come to our apartment and provide him with assistance, they help him with exercising in our apartment or downstairs in the gym in order to maintain his muscle tone and range of motion as best as possible. While he has been able to adapt exercises and use what we have in the apartment, one thing we have found out that he would benefit tremendously from is having a standing apparatus in our apartment. He discussed this with his doctor and physical therapist at the International MS Clinic in NYC and they arranged for a technician from the Easy Stand company to come and show Mark the equipment. This apparatus will be easy for myself and his female PCA to transfer Mark out of his wheelchair to be able to stand for a period of time each day. The benefits of Mark being able to stand each day are the following:
- Improve/maintain bone integrity/skeletal development
- Lessen/manage the progression of scoliosis
- Strengthen cardiovascular system and build endurance
- Improve Circulation
- Reduce Swelling
- Improve bowel function and regularity
- Aid in kidney and bladder functions
- Improve/maintain range of motion
- Management of atrophy in the trunk and lower extremities
- Manage pressure (ulcers) through changing positions
- Improve strength to trunk and lower extremities
- Decrease joint/muscle contractures
We would like to be able to have this standing table at our apartment as soon as we are able to raise the funds. This apparatus is not covered under Medicare/Medicaid as it is not considered medically necessary but as you can see there are many benefits that Mark will gain from using this every day. We thank you in advance for your consideration of donating any amount that you are able to. Every bit will help us reach our goal for better health for Mark.
