Working hard to be a Pilot and Military Serviceman

My name is Brysen Kraft and I currently live in East Tennessee. My interest in aviation and desire to serve others started many years ago from attending air shows and listening to my grandfather who was a pilot and served in the United States Air Force. He and my cousin, Randall, who is also a fireman and pilot, have been a huge influence on my decision to pursue my passions in flying and helping others.

As a Sophomore in high school, I am working hard to achieve a goal of mine in receiving an appointment to one of our countries military academies. I believe if I can obtain my private pilot license while still in high school, it will demonstrate to all post-secondary institutions how dedicated I am. I constantly challenge myself academically and physically by taking all AP/Honor classes all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I am actively involved in multiple school clubs, hold an officer position for my class and am part of the varsity soccer team as well as a travel club soccer team. In addition to my scholastic obligations, I hold a part time job with Beech Grove Farms which is physically demanding at times. I understand better than most people my age, if you want something, you have to work for it. Having my part time job has allowed me to gain an understanding of the difficulty in earning and saving money.

My parents support me in every goal I set for myself and help as much as they can. They surprised me at Christmas with the opportunity to take a few flight lessons with Knoxville Flight Academy, with the understanding that I had to financially contribute after my initial gift runs out. The financial outlay to obtain a private pilot license is extremely expensive and time consuming. The average costs per hour ranges anywhere from $50 - $185 with approximately 50+ hours required. There are also additional fees such as the costs of medical waivers, log books, study guides, headset, insurance and FAA exam fees. I have researched and applied for some aviation scholarships to help with the costs, however, at the present time I have not been selected as a recipient.  I will continue to work hard at my job to save for this goal and would appreciate any additional donations provided.

With my hard work and dedication to my academics, sports, job and extra curricular activities such as flying, my hope is to provide a well rounded application to our military academies and be selected for an appointment. This opportunity would give me the chance to pay your kindness back by serving our country.
