Relief aid for laid off workers

Donation protected
In this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals’ basic human needs of food, shelter, and clothing are being threatened.

The basic human right to work has been taken from too many, by the Coronavirus.

The stories of hardship to individuals just keep pouring in. Sole breadwinners who have been laid off, wondering which bills to pay, whether to keep the lights on or to ensure a roof over their heads.

These are our members; they are a part of our family at the Philadelphia Joint Board, Workers United. We are a socially progressive union which represents more than 2,500 members who work in the hospitality, laundry, apparel and textile, distribution, manufacturing and food service industries in the Philadelphia and South Jersey region.

All of our members are hourly wage workers. Majority (80%) have been laid off in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic. Many worked in industrial laundries that serviced now shuttered hotels, and casinos; others worked in food services, in colleges, and corporations, now shuttered because they are considered non-essential. Warehousing, if not related to essential services, has ground to a halt.

Our members are hurting. While current government relief efforts help mitigate some challenges, they are not quite enough, and others are left out.

Beyond the assistance we are offering of helping to apply for unemployment, ensuring our members remain first in line to be recalled when the economy regains its foothold, and the behind the scenes advocacy to try to convince manufacturers to repurpose their businesses to address current needs of face masks, and gowns, we want to do more.

That is why we are conducting this fundraiser, to initially raise $200,000 towards addressing the food needs of our members. Should this pandemic become protracted, we may need to adjust our goal.

Every cent raised will go towards ensuring those in need do not go hungry or have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. The Philadelphia Joint Board intends to set up a weekly distribution site at our offices. Depending on amount raised, we would either provide grocery gift cards to each individual, or bags of food staples, and fresh produce.

Monies donated through this GoFundMe site will initially be disbursed to a fund called the Peter J. Maleno Fund, administered by the Philadelphia Joint Board. This fund was set up more than 30 years ago as an emergency fund for our members. Peter J. Maleno was a long-time business agent at the Philadelphia Joint Board, who worked tirelessly to help all workers.

All contributions are non tax-deductible.
