Workers' Stories Project Fundraiser

The Workers’ Stories Project has been the only Scottish attempt to record the transformation of social life during COVID-19 from a working-class perspective. 


Now we need your help to continue archiving and sharing the experiences of Scottish workers during the pandemic. 

Help us raise £3000 to create a website and a touring exhibition. 

Your donations will allow us to make a permanent online home for the work we have collected and produce a touring exhibition after the pandemic to provide a space to share and reflect on workers’ stories of Covid-19.

Our project began publishing stories in June 2020, starting with a drawing that depicted the daily concerns of Marion Johnstone, a postie from North Ayrshire. Since then, we’ve published the poems, diaries, stories, artwork and videos of nurses, railway staff, lorry drivers, supermarket employees and creative arts workers. Our stories have come from the length and breadth of Scotland, from Glasgow to the Highlands,  Aberdeenshire to West Lothian. AS well as this we’ve hosted talks and workshops encouraging the creative expression of workers’ stories. 


The project will continue to collect and publish stories and run workshops  as long as the pandemic and social distancing are at the centre of our lives. After that point the stories will be archived with the National Library of Scotland, and we will produce a touring exhibition. 


We need your help to take our work to the next stage.

As the pandemic trundles on and its meaning is being determined by the voices of politicians and journalists, it is more important than ever that workers’ voices are part of that national conversation. For that reason, Workers’ Stories has set up ths crowdfunder that aims to collect a war chest of £3,000 to support two major undertakings:


1. Starting our own website. Up to now, Workers’ Stories has been hosted by Conter, but as the project has grown, it has become increasingly clear we need our own permanent dedicated site to make our growing archive of stories more visible.

2. Funding for a touring exhibition. When the pandemic finishes, we want to take Workers’ Stories around the country to ensure COVID-19 is commemorated through a working-class perspective.

Up to now, our efforts have been funded by the six members of the project team and Workers’ Stories has had a shoestring budget. These new undertakings will cost far more than we can raise among our small team, so we need you to support us and make it possible.

We are asking for individual donations, but would also particularly welcome contributions from organisations such as trade union branches who have an interest in our work. We can’t expand our project on our own. Just as Workers’ Stories has thrived from the creativity of submissions from across Scotland, so advancing to a larger profile and a physical as well as digital presence needs your help.
