Woolsey Fire rising from the ashes

My name is Alice Montenegro Moreira, and in my late 20s I decided to settle in beautiful Malibu and raise my family. Because of the Woolsey Fire, we lost our home and my place to work. It's all ashes now. When the fire came in the night, I was at home with my daughter and my dogs.  I tried to gather and save the most important things such as documents, photos, and our lives.  We were surrounded by intense smoke, with very little time to load the car and load the fireproof containers behind the house. As I packed the car, I looked above our mountain and saw the flames right behind us, with the winds blowing so hard I thought: this is the moment to save us. I put everyone in the car and I locked the door (for what?) and I didn't look back. My heart was broken and I was in a mission to save my family.  We lost our piece of paradise, but we are safe.  What is keeping me strong, is the love of my family, friends, and community.  I am living one moment at a time.
