Wood hualing for the elders of Big Mountain

Well its that time of the season when community volunteers of Dine Land and Water take time to show our appreciation to our community elders here in Sander Az area as well as our elders resisting relocation for over 40 years in the Big Mountain/Cactus Valley/Black Mesa areas. For the past four years Dine' Land and Water has been a support along with other organizations in an winter annual gathering which was started many years ago by the community. This was started by just hauling wood/water, herding sheep and making food run to families during so called thanksgiving. Last year we was able to reach out to 17 families , we did watershed restoration projects in areas were wood is being gathered and built multiple brush gabions on local washes.
Dine land and Water is a local Arizona organization based on the Navajo Reservation that is dedicated to learning and working towards a sustainable future. Whether its revitalizing techniques used in the past, or mastering new ways, we can continue to be sustainable. One way is ensuring the community's short term goal of hauling fire wood to local community members. Hauling wood requires various techniques to be applied out in the field. The wood hauler is responsible for only cutting only dry parts of tree and utilizing the remainder of the tree branches. The remaining tree branches can then be placed upstream in local washes. When this takes place, it secures the wash from erosion in it's local watershed.
Eliminating dry or dead wood from an area is also a form of fire prevention. Removing dry wood in the winter will ensure the likely hood the spread wild fires during the dry seasons. Erosion control prevents sediment deficiency as well as ensures that soil loss does not occur in local washes. This form of erosion control also helps in water flow. Slowing down the water flow in washes allows the ground time to absorb the water; versus just running through the wash. Rock gab ions could also be used in this case, which are little earth dam like structures made of rock that are also designed to sedate the flow of water and nurture other sediments. Sanders, Arizona and the Houck community are both highly dense wooded areas.
To better ensure the sustainability of our local community , today we as an organization have been reusing wood debris from our own projects and wood hauling but scraps from other wood haulers and utilizing the material to build structures in our local washes. By doing this, each time we cut wood we make the intention of helping rebuild and replenish our local watershed.
As we move forward into the winter season, we need your help, and here are a few ways your monetary donation could help us continue the work . With your monetary donation you can help us continue wood hauling, by helping us purchase oil, gas mixture, gas, 6 new chains, two new bars, sharpening tools, new filters , a new spark plug, and basic chainsaw/truck service .
