Women's movement 100; Angels of the North. Community dance project
Hi, I'm Freddie Garland of Tenfoot Dance and this is my story...
Why am I here? Why am I hoping you are reading this...well I need your help!
Women's Movement 100; Angels of the North is a 'dance for film' project addressing issues surrounding the Women's Suffrage Movement. It's a journey of northern women from our communities told through dance to celebrate and commemorate the passing of one hundredth anniversary of first gaining some entitlement to vote. We've seen how the last 100 years have unfolded and acknowledge the incredible achievements to date but what does the future hold? Where will the next 100 years take us?
My aim, to memorialize, mobilize and inspire women of today and in the future. If a person or event is ever 'memorialized', something is produced that will continue to exist and remind people. To 'memorialize' can also be used to 'honour and commemorate'....This dance for film project plans to do exactly that. It will form part of an exhibition allowing an alternative format by which to engage thoughts surrounding suffrage, equality, and how history has such a vital role in our futures. Quite often by using an alternative form such as dance or art you change a means of access to sources of information, a new way of engaging and focusing others into questioning and acknowledging information.
This project, this journey, aims to engage and challenge 100 everyday women drawn from four of our Northern power house cities Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle and Hull's communities to create an exhibition of narrative dance.
I want to portray a movement- not just within the initial sense of moving but taking a stance, forming a collective, a gathering, a sense of uprising and articulate a strength of controlled empowerment to women through unity. This growth and drive of women uniting and fighting for and asserting their rights, their needs, their desires, their dreams.
I'm currently working alongside Professors of The University of Sheffield, using their research, writings and lectures as inspirations within the choreography.
Empowering women to deliver a choreographic programme against the hardship backdrop of Northern industrial life. Filming in locations that depict each city's northern heritage and beauty whilst still holding that now past industrial feel, the contrast of natural beauty against the harsh yet strong beauty of industry is envisaged as underscoring a leitmotiv of the enduring role of women.
If this project were to instil an increased sense of self-worth, a new found empowerment, a drive to want a better understanding of suffrage or of our achievements to date, or of our place, our role in the community and how as individuals we have a responsibility to improve the quality of all our lives, for all our futures and begin to understand what's still needed to be done...
Without the financial assistance, I cannot continue to create this work, the project and its exhibition comes to a halt.
What does your money go towards? costumes, filming, photography, graphics and print works, delivery of choreography, studio hire, music, filming locations, the exhibition and its tour, research and resources.
As a thank you for your support you will be invited to various private exclusive events, from filming days to opening nights of exhibitions to networking events.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
COVID 19 brought all physical activity to a pause. However, we look to resume this project at the very earliest opportunity.
