Hi everyone!
My name is Sadhna, and I am a student pursuing my masters of social work.
In April 2018, I will be doing an internship in Nairobi, Kenya, working with victims of HIV/AIDS. During my time, I will be working with a team providing counselling, guidance, and education to the women suffering, supplying them with adequate resources.
I will also be conducting research while I am there, contributing to gender studies in which I am utmost passionate about. A major epidemic that occurs within Kenya, in particular, is a procedure entitled "Female Genital Mutilation" (FGM), which is the process of removing a female child's clitorus. This procedure is done in an unsanitary manner, often using household utensils such as a scissors or a knife, while the child is conscious. Furthermore, this usually leads to HIV, other severe health complications or fatality. The most heartbreaking part of it all is that majority of times, this procedure is preformed by the child's own kin (mother/grandmother). FGM is culturally practiced and encouraged, stemming from the strong belief in patriarchy (that men are superior to women). I will be educating the women of this community by explaining the dangers of FGM, through allowing them to gain further insight upon human rights.
More than anything, I hope to empower and support the women during my time spent in Kenya. This is an incredible opportunity which I've been offered, and all money raised will be spent SOLELY on amenities for women, children, and families in the community who need it most.
