Woman's and Veterans Trauma Center

We are looking to start-up the Sean Turner Women's and Veteran's Trauma Center.  We have already located a space that would work to make this a reality. The Center will focus on providing counseling services to include (group therapy, child and family counseling and trauma counseling), life and employment coaching, and provide outreach services.  Our Center will serve as a hub for connecting woman and veterans to support services for those experiencing sexual trauma, unsafe living environments and traumatic stress disorders.  It will also serve as a safe house for woman and children fleeing unstable or violent homes.  The Women's Trauma center will be a beacon, connecting women and providing protection in a community that is underserved.  We will be operating out of North Minneapolis and our goal is to work within and alongside the community providing things such as a community gardens, weekly classes for woman and families, mediation, improving urban greenspace, and a outdoor recreational space.  The funds will be used for the purchasing of the property and as capital for hiring and training the staff necessary for running these services.

A little about myself:  I am a recent graduate with a degree in Family Counseling and a certification in Health and Wellness Coaching.  I am a female veteran and served in the military for over 10 years and am a survivor of sexual trauma.  Overseas I experienced the loss of friends and the devastation of seeing children and families torn apart.  It took me a while to deal with and seek assistance for my PTSD and related trauma, but as I processed through it, I realized how limited the resources were for veteran's and in particular African-American women at large.  As a black woman you are taught to be strong and as a Soldier you are taught to bare the pain and not ask for help.  In the end this can leave someone feeling as if there is no where they can turn for assistance. Those feelings of desperation or aloneness can lead to drastic actions and awful consequences.  I want to provide a place where help doesn't have to be earned but given with hands open.  Overseas I saw communities left in shambles and families struggle to rebuild amongst civil unrest and destruction.  I grew up in the heart of North Minneapolis and over the years it has broken my heart to see people stigmatize and dismantle our beautiful culture. I took a walk through my childhood home and I saw damage and sadness, but I also saw children riding their bikes, mothers working in the yard, and fathers playing touch football in a open field.  What I saw was a community that had hope, and just needed others to recognize that hope within themselves.

Gaining the support to further this organization and purchase the space for this Center will be the first step in building a refuge and a place many will call home.  The day we are blessed and open our doors to serve the community will a day we begin the process of healing and providing options to those that thought they had none.  I am grateful for your interest and support!  Please reach out to me if you have resources or would like to become involved in other ways.
