Every summer, students have the opportunity to participate in the Columbia Publishing Course
, a certificate program that is part of the Columbia Journalism School. The Columbia Publishing Course is an intensive, six-week introduction to all aspects of book, magazine and digital publishing. During a rigorous application process, publishing veteran and course director Shaye Areheart selects 110 promising students from around the world to participate in the course. Several of our WMG members are graduates, including board member Michelle Burford
, who completed the course in 1997 and has since returned to speak to and mentor students.
Since its inception 70 years ago the Columbia Publishing Course has been recognized as the premier training ground for those aspiring to work in publishing. If you want to work in publishing, then the NYC-based program prepares students for entry-level jobs in all aspects of book, magazine and digital publishing through daily lectures and workshops.
Students have the opportunity to network and get mentorship with some of the biggest magazines and publishing houses in the world through the course. Students who’ve graduated from the course have gone on to have successful publishing careers at places like Random House
, New York Magazine
, Harper Collins
, just to name a few. WMG (Women’s Media Group)
