Make a Wish Trip 4 Isaak

A Smile That Changed Everything

-Story Written by Ashley Myers

It all started with seeing his big smile in the 2nd Grade gym class in April 2013. His name was Isaak and he was bouncing a basketball and smiling all at the same time. There was something that changed in my heart that day all because of that big smile....Here is Isaak's story:

When Isaak was around 4 years old his mother wondered why he wasn't running like the other children. She noticed him getting weaker and his calves were swollen. Until a year ago Isaak's family didn't know what was different about Isaak. Recent doctor visits showed that Isaak has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This is a progressive disease that affects all voluntary muscles which involves the heart and breathing muscles. Unfortunately, this disease is fatal.

When I saw Isaak that day in gym class I knew I needed to do something for him!

One night I researched on the Make A Wish website on how to nominate a child. I knew I needed some extra help as I didn't know that much of what Isaak had. I emailed Lindsay Fitzgerald, Sublette Elementary School Nurse, who helped me get in contact with Isaak's doctor in Wichita. Once all the paperwork was filled out and submitted to the Make A Wish Foundation it was a 2 month waiting process to hear back if Isaak got approved. Once Isaak was approved, two very sweet ladies from the Make A Wish Foundation came out to meet Isaak. Anna Peters, Isaak’s translator, told one of the ladies to make sure she didn’t drive on the dirt roads to the family’s house as it had rained that week and told the ladies to take the paved roads. Heather, one of the Make A Wish granters, just followed her GPS and got stuck on one of the muddy roads. This caused Isaak's dad to get his truck and pull Heather out of the mud. How Funny!

After meeting Isaak, the ladies submitted Isaak's Make A Wish request. He told them he wanted to go to Hawaii and see the volcanos and fish! It took about 3 weeks for Make A Wish to give us the final approval and to give us a date on when he could go! NOVEMBER 2015!!!We won't know the exact date until 2 weeks before they are able to go.

Make A Wish will pay for most of the trip but there are several things they won't pay for and that is why I have started fundraising! Isaak's parents and older sister also get to go on the trip. Isaak asks his mother everyday when they can start packing!

I have to give lots of credit to an amazing woman named Anna Peters. We drove to Isaak’s house one Friday night so that I could meet Isaak’s mother and sister. She has been a huge part in this process.

Isaak is now in 4th Grade at Sublette Elementary School and always has a big smile on his face despite his disease. His mother says he never complains at all and his smile will melt your heart!

Thank you for reading Isaak’s story and hope that you would consider donating! All of the money will go directly to Isaak and the expenses for his trip. For instance, the transportation to the airport, certain meals/snacks, extra spending money, money to print pictures from the trip and lost family income while on the trip. Thank you in advance for your donation.
