<div>Mein geliebter Kater Sox, erst vier Jahre alt, hat in den letzten Wochen einen schweren und fast tödlichen Leidensweg hinter sich. Er lag 10 Tage auf der Intensivstation im Universitätstierspital Zürich.

<div>Alles begann harmlos mit Harnsteinen. Die Diagnose lautete FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease), eine häufige, aber behandelbare Erkrankung. Doch anstatt sich zu erholen, wurde Sox zunehmend schwächer. Er bekam hohes Fieber, fraß nichts mehr und lag apathisch da. Ich hatte Angst, ihn zu verlieren.

<div>Dann kam die erschütternde Nachricht: Sein Bauch war mit Flüssigkeit gefüllt, der Verdacht fiel zunächst auf FIP. Es stellte sich heraus, dass Sox an einem septischen Abdomen litt, einer lebensgefährlichen Infektion in der Bauchhöhle. Die Folge: ein septischer Schock. Sein Zustand war kritisch. Nur eine sofortige Notoperation konnte ihm das Leben retten – doch auch das mit ungewissem Ausgang.

<div>Die Ursache war ein Magendurchbruch, verursacht durch ein Schmerzmittel, das er ursprünglich gegen die Harnsteine erhalten hatte. Ein tragischer und vermeidbarer Nebeneffekt. Hätten wir es nur früher gewusst.

<div>Die Notoperation am 27. August 2025 rettete ihm das Leben. Nach mehreren Blut- und Plasmatransfusionen stabilisierte sich sein Zustand langsam. Heute ist Sox wieder zu Hause, verschmust, verspielt und lebensfroh. Die äußerlichen Wunden sind verheilt, und auch innerlich wird er von Tag zu Tag stärker. Die restliche Flüssigkeit im Bauchraum geht kontinuierlich zurück.

<div>Die vergangenen Wochen waren emotional wie finanziell eine enorme Belastung. Die gesamten Tierarzt- und Klinikkosten beliefen sich auf 12’700 Franken. Wir haben alles gegeben, um Sox die bestmögliche Behandlung zu ermöglichen. Er ist ein Familienmitglied, ich hätte ihn nie aus finanziellen Gründen einschläfern können.

<div>Sox ist ein unglaublich liebevoller, anhänglicher Kater. Trotz seiner Schmerzen hat er nie aufgehört, Nähe zu suchen, zu schmusen und uns zu zeigen, wie sehr er das Leben liebt. Sein Lebenswille war stärker als die Krankheit und wir sind unendlich dankbar, dass er noch bei uns ist.

<div><em>My beloved cat Sox, only four years old, has endured a severe and almost fatal ordeal in recent weeks. He spent several days in the intensive care unit at the University Veterinary Hospital in Zurich.</em>

<div><em>It all began innocently enough with urinary stones. The diagnosis was FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease), a common but treatable condition. But instead of recovering, Sox became increasingly weaker. He developed a high fever, stopped eating, and lay there listlessly. I was afraid of losing him. Then came the devastating news: His abdomen was filled with fluid, and the initial suspicion was FIP. It turned out that Sox was suffering from a septic abdomen, a life-threatening infection in the abdominal cavity. The result: septic shock. His condition was critical. Only immediate emergency surgery could save his life – but even that had an uncertain outcome.﻿</em>

<div><em>The cause was a perforation of the stomach, caused by a painkiller he had originally received for the kidney stones. A tragic and preventable side effect. If only we had known earlier.</em>

<div><em>The emergency surgery on August 27, 2025, saved his life. After several blood and plasma transfusions, his condition slowly stabilized. Today, Sox is back home, cuddly, playful, and full of life. His external wounds have healed, and he's also getting stronger internally every day. The remaining fluid in his abdomen is continuously decreasing.</em>

<div><em>The past few weeks have been an enormous emotional and financial strain. The total veterinary and hospital costs amounted to CHF 12,700. We did everything we could to provide Sox with the best possible treatment. He is a member of the family; I could never have put him down for financial reasons.﻿</em>

<div><em>Sox is an incredibly loving, affectionate cat. Despite his pain, he never stopped seeking closeness, cuddling, and showing us how much he loves life. His will to live was stronger than his illness, and we are infinitely grateful that he is still with us.﻿</em>
