Winter Bike for Tuktoyaktuk ‘House of Hope’

The Beaufort Delta region has experienced a heartbreaking amount of suicides.

In reaction to a number of young adults lost in the small hamlet of Tuktuyaaqtuuq (Tuktoyaktuk), youth have been demanding more safe spaces for themselves. Since the passings in September, young adults Agnes Krengnektak, Nathan 'Muk' Kuptana, Blaire Bernhardt, and other youth have been volunteering their time nightly for the opened space of Tuktoyaktuk's Kitti Hall for older youth.

As the community continues to develop sustainable supports, let's show these volunteers our appreciation by helping cover costs including food. Requests from young adults include a piano and music books.

Join me on my first long-distance overnight bike trek down the winding 150km gravel Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway (ITH). Temperatures in mid-November are currently between -10 and -20 C with arctic tundra winds.

If these youth continue to stay up to make sure others have a sober place amidst a housing and mental health crisis…

I will take the challenge as the Western Arctic winds continue to freeze everything over.

Based in the nearest community of Inuvik (2-hour drive), as a video journalist who has been spending time in Tuktoyaktuk asking in what ways I can help, I’ve seen and heard just how important keeping this space open is!

All proceeds are given to the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk under 'House of Hope' which the youth leads will have access to make program purchases. The first exchange was December 1st.
