WAM! Winchester Art Murals Project

We want art! The community deserves art! Let's give them art! The Winchester Art Murals Project is looking to paint our town a little brighter, and we need your help.

The Winchester Art Murals project goal is to beautify underutilized spaces and increase arts awareness and tourism in Winchester, Virginia. The project is set to begin in Old Town Winchester's Indian Alley focusing on bringing interesting art on the backs and sides of buildings.

Why Indian Alley in Winchester? Located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley just North of Washington DC is Winchester, Virginia. The city center has the quaintness of a small town feel yet is busy with commerce and diversity with wonderful restaurants, shops, theaters, music halls, art galleries, farm markets and street festivals. Indian Alley is a well traveled thoroughfare for cars and pedestrians alike and sits in downtown, historic Winchester's shopping district on a beautiful, pedestrian mall with Late Victorian and Itialianate architecture, dating mostly from the 1800s thru the early 1900s.

Some of these buildings have been updated, but the backs of most of these buildings are kind of drab, and Indian Alley sees a lot of action between drive-thru traffic and pedestrians either hustling or strolling from the parking garage to the walking mall for work or play. There are even festivals held on Indian Alley, making it the perfect place to enjoy mural art.

Who am I and why do I care about art?
My name is Kim Johnston, and I am an active resident in the City of Winchester. I have lived here for 7 years and absolutely love living in the historic district. I enjoy the quaintness, the accessibility, the walkability and the overall vibe of the town. It is a place I call home and am so happy to work and raise my family here.

I am a creative consultant and owner of the Winchester Art Market and organize or co-organize art events like WAM! and aMuse Art Fair. In the last few years, there has been a movement for more public art, and I hope to bring that to our community by spearheading the Winchester Art Murals project. My goal is to foster community while bringing color and art to the masses in the downtown area in which I live, work and love.

Make it Matter. Who will benefit you ask? You will. I will. Our community will. By creating an ongoing mural program, I yearn to leave a legacy for my children and our community to enjoy for years to come, and it all starts with one mural at a time. And, that one mural starts with you (and me, and us together).

How can you help our community?
I am seeking sponsors and community funding and assistance to help create the magic. Your donations will be used wisely and go toward the following; artist/muralist, high quality, exterior paint and sealants, materials and supplies, scaffolding, permits, insurance, ongoing project management and for using the GoFundMe platform to make this mural project a reality.

When is the project set to begin? Now! Or, as soon as funds are raised. We'd like to have our first mural up by the end of August and in time for MATPRA, a huge travel bloggers event, held in September this year in Winchester. This is a terrific opportunity for publicity for our project and for sponsors.

For more information or to check on progress, please follow us here for updates or on Facebook via Winchester Art Murals or Winchester Art Market.

And, please share this with your network of Jedis. Every bit counts! Just imagine- if you and 10 of your friends gave $10 (or the cost of two lattes or iced mochas from Starbucks). We'd have $100 bucks! Imagine what we can do with a little more and with more people sharing and spreading the love. You will have cool art on cool buildings! It will become a reality. Our historic and quaint town will finally have a little more color.

Thank you in advance! I look forward to making magic, making it matter and painting our town a little brighter, one mural at a time.

Let's do this together!

Sincerely,
Kim Johnston
