On July 4th my sister Crystal and her husband Jeremy were on vacation in Riverside, CA 6 hours away from home with their four children. She was 20 weeks into her pregnancy with twins when she went into pre-term labor and unfortunately started leaking amniotic fluid. She was put on bed rest but because she was so far from home (they live in Clovis, about six hours away) the hospital did not want her driving, so she was admitted to Loma Linda University Hospital. It was a very scary 3 week stay with a lot of ups, downs, and daily reminders that she could lose her babies at any moment. Being so far from home, Jeremy and the family had to make the six hour drive to see her every weekend.
Despite being on bedrest, at 23 weeks and one day she had to have an emergency cesarean due to an umbilical cord prolapse. Calvin Ray and Haven June Lee were born on July 25th. They both went to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) where they were put on ventilators and many IVs for feeding, blood transfusions, medications... you name it. At about 3 days old, the staff found that both babies had PDA, which is an opening between heart valves, and they found a bleed in Haven's brain and dad was called to come down. On top of these issues, both Haven and Calvin developed fungal infections on their skin which made its way to their bloodstream. Haven has thinner skin and the infection wreaked havoc on her body. She could not overcome the infection and the brain bleed. Calvin was having more issues with the PDA and it was causing multiple problems internally with his organs.
On August 4th, Haven and Calvin were baptized. All the family drove down for the ceremony and the siblings were able to read the babies stories and see them for the first time.
On the 9th of August, after Haven had been fighting so hard the impossible decision was made to have her taken off of all of her IVs and left with only her ventilator to provide oxygen and one IV for pain meds. Due to the severity of her brain bleed, infection, and various health problems, she would not have any quality of life. She held on until the next day, then while Haven was being held by her mommy, the doctors told Crystal that Calvin needed to have emergency heart surgery. The doctor did not have a high prognosis for him. At this point it was impossible for mom to stay with Haven while still on the ventilator as she was slowly passing. The decision was made to remove the ventilator. While holding Haven as she passed, mommy had to say her goodbyes to Calvin as well who was being prepped for his surgery. Soon after this Haven passed away while being lovingly cradling by her grieving mother. Calvin made it through his surgery but is still fighting for his life with a bad blood infection and sever lung problems.
Through this time their family has gone through an upheaval. Mom is the one who does the daily schedule for the house and runs their four kids around practices and school and she has been in a hospital 6 hours away since July 5th. Dad is self employed running the family business and is having to balance the business and all 4 kids very busy schedules with school and sports. During this time, dad has had to take a lot of time away from the business to take on what mom normally does for the kids and this financially has taken a hit on their regular income.
Mom was in the hospital (6 hours away) for 3 weeks on bed rest and now in the NICU with extensive procedures, surgeries and more on babies since July 5th. They have just started to receive medical bills and notices from insurance that some treatments and services are not being covered. Any money donated is to help with losses from the household income from mom not being able to work at all and dad having to take time away from work to care for their 4 children on his own. This is also to help cover medical bills that they are receiving for the unexpected hospital stay out of town and the high risk NICU services they are getting and to help with memorial services for Haven. Mom continues to live 6 hours away from home staying in the NICU with Calvin 18 hours a day while dad balances the business and caring for the 4 kids at home.
