College Bound Middle Schoolers Round 2

Dear community partners, members, and education advocates,

We are Willie L. Brown Middle School, a STEM-focused school in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunter’s Point. As one of the most socio-economically challenged neighborhoods in the city, we serve students from traditionally marginalized communities that are underrepresented in higher education, fostering a love of learning and college-going culture at our school. 85% of our student body are students of color, 100% of them are resilient and driven scholars, poised to be first-generation college students in their families.

This year, our goal is to take our FIRST graduating class of 8th-grade scholars on a college tour road trip. They have already seen our local colleges, but we want to continue reinforcing a college-going culture with more exposure.

We have secured college campus tours and presentations at both UCLA and USC, allowing our students to experience and understand both private and public education. To maximize our experience, we are also presented with an opportunity to participate in a STEM-inspired class at Disneyland in Anaheim, allowing our students to understand and apply their STEM education in real-world, career settings.

We aim to provide this incredible experience to the current 8th-grade class, as well as the graduates for the next two years to come. This is a huge ask for our families and community members. However, the inspiration our students would gain from this experience is invaluable to their success and future endeavors. We are looking for the support of our local and global communities to make this opportunity possible for our students.

Below is a tentative outline of our trip:

The Cost of the trip for 45 students and 6 adults:

Transportation (1 buses for 1  days): $3,750
STEM Activity @ Disneyland: $5500 ($100 per person)
Lodging: $6,500 (2 students per room for 1 night)
Meals: $6, 000 ( 6 meals)

Total: $21,750.00 per year

For 43,500 we’ll be able to provide this experience to 8th-grade students for the next two years!

We are grateful for each contribution. Please share and support our wonderful scholars and future leaders and innovators.

In solidarity,

Willie L. Brown Middle School Staff and Community
