Who we are
Williams Elementary School is a rural school in Central Maine, and our students need your help. For only the second time ever, a group of highly dedicated fourth and fifth graders earned an invitation to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals by placing second in their division at the Maine State Odyssey of the Mind championship.

What is Odyssey of the Mind?
Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition focused on creative problem-solving and is entirely student-driven. Parent volunteers help the children get organized for the competition, however, the students do all the work. They write an original play that addresses a problem, rehearse and make all of their costumes, sets and props.

At competitions, the play is performed in front of a panel of judges who rate the students on their creativity and ingenuity. Students also compete with an on-the-spot Spontaneous problem without the help of any coaches.  Our Williams team scored high on both problems at the regional and state competitions.

Costs
Getting to Worlds is not an inexpensive endeavor this year. The competition is being held at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. It costs almost $1,000 per student and parent/guardian for travel, lodging, and competition fees. Our team is comprised of seven very talented students and the kids will be assisting in the fundraising efforts as well. Our school district, RSU 18, can only provide a limited amount of support, as this is an extracurricular activity.

Our timetable
We only have a short window of time in which to raise the funds, which is why we are hoping that you can help. The competition is being held over Memorial Day weekend, and we need to raise the majority of funds by the end of April in order to reserve our space at Worlds.

Helping these students attend a global competition like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. For some of these students, it will be their first time leaving Maine to go to a larger city, not to mention being on a large-sized college campus. They will meet children from all over the world, and engage with thought leaders as they not only compete, but also participate in the activities planned for Worlds, such as presentations from NASA.

Any amount will help our students on their way to Worlds. If you can't give, please share this page with others who may be able to. Every little bit helps!
