Broche Goes to New Zealand!

Donation protected
I'm Broche, a soon-to-be 30-year-old about to embark on the top adventure on my bucket list: a year-long trip through New Zealand.

Growing up with Anthropologist parents, I was lucky enough to live in several countries and various US states all before the age of 18, but once I entered college, I discovered that travel is a lot harder when you're funding it yourself!

Enjoy this picture of me in Japan in the 80s. Sweet bowl cut and sweater vest, no?
I haven't left the country in ten years, focusing on a career in the book industry instead. Following your passion satisfies your heart, but not always your pocket book. I've earned an MFA in Writing Literature for Children, and have worked in museum libraries, corporate bookstores, publishing companies, and independent bookstores, with my ultimate dream being to open my own community space that includes a book/toy store, cafe/event space, and teen rec center.

But before I settle down in one place to do all that, I've decided to venture out on my own and explore the country I've wanted to see for as long as I can remember. Plus, it seems like the best 30th birthday present ever. Turning 30 doesn't bother me, but I do think it's a good time to evaluate what I've done in the past and where I'd like to go in my future. What better time and place to do that then on an adventure in New Zealand?

If I can have this much fun while on a truly horrendous date on a boat on the Columbia River, imagine how much fun I can have in NZ?!

When people think of New Zealand, it seems like the things that come to mind first are Lord of the Rings and gorgeous landscapes. While I'm certainly excited to explore Hobbiton and other well-known highlights, I'm more excited to do something called "slow travel," where I get to know the people and discover lesser known places where I can stay for a while. With a working-holiday visa, I plan to get a job in a pub or bookstore, work as a WWOOFer and hopefully find some housesitting gigs, discovering the beauty of one location for a few months at a time.

I love housesitting, and have lots of experience, including this adorable yurt with chickens and gardens I sit for regularly!

I plan to purchase a car when I arrive and travel around both islands for a month or so, choosing a few places to return to for longer stays.

This GoFundMe campaign will help me with my initial travel costs before I get a local NZ job; things like purchasing new backpacking & camping gear while I'm still in the States (it's very expensive to purchase that over there), getting travel insurance, and buying a car when I arrive, in addition to other preparation expenses and food when I first arrive. I need a new lightweight tent and sleeping bag, as mine are several years old and not made for trekking. Here's the backpacking pack I hope to fit everything into.

Every little bit donated will help me be better prepared and not starve or run out of gas while I'm there.

Thank you so much for reading this far, and for every penny that's donated. I'll be writing about my adventures on my blog, WildlyTraveled , so please do follow along!
