Wildlife Matters - Medical Building

As Durham Region’s only wildlife rehabilitation centre, Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue has accepted over 1300 sick, injured and orphaned animals this season. Already exceeding last years number by more than 200 individuals. This number is expected to only increase with our community expanding and developing.  

Despite not having a field rescue team, Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue’s volunteers have jumped into a lake to save a drowning baby beaver, tangled in what appeared to be fishing line. We have battled the rush of the dam in Port Hope to help beaver kit stranded on a ledge.  We have captured and treated a porcupine dragging herself across a busy road. We have picked up a snowy owl sitting on the median of the 401 in Bowmanville. We even had a team of volunteers spend over 50 hours looking for and attempting to catch a turkey in Whitby with an arrow through his chest!

We have read and saved each note left by a child on the box of an animal coming in. One saying, “My name is Lucky, Please Save My Life”. Another Reading “My name is Isabell. This is Pee Wee, Can you take care of him so he can see his mom again. I know I would miss my mom if I was hurt.”  We cry each time an animal crosses the rainbow bridge. We cry each time an animal is picked up by its finding family to be released back into the wild. We know we have done our job.

If given the chance we would do it all over again, and we will.

Animals are being pushed out of their habitat to make room for our homes, shopping centres and highways. They are forced to survive in our communities. They are deemed as unwanted pests. Their importance in our ecosystem is forgotten.

Humans depend on wildlife to survive. One can not exist without the other. It is impossible.

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue is at its capacity.

We are growing faster than we ever anticipated. The growing need for wildlife rehabilitation is due to human expansion, something we can not control.

We are in desperate need of a medical building to hold all of the injured and orphaned species that come in on a daily basis. Without this building we will never be able to accept more than 1300 animals each year.

A wildlife centre North of Barrie has donated a school portable to us to transform into a medical centre!!!!

But we need to transport it to Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue, which will cost upwards of $10,000, as it needs to be cut in half to meet the new highway regulations.

We are not funded by any municipality although we work closely with them.

We are not funded by any form of government although we support them in their times of need.

We are only able to provide this service free to our community based on our educational programs and your contributions.

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue is run on volunteers who work countless hours to make sure that each individual that comes into our care gets the highest level of medical and mental care.
