Wildfire Relief Fund for Healthcare Heroes

It’s impossible to look at the photo above without feeling a wrenching wave of heartache—especially once you learn it belonged to Andrea Hart, a Resident Care Manager at Marquis Marian Estates, who lost everything to the fire.

But even in this time of horrific tragedy and unimaginable grief, she still showed up for work the very next day. “It’s where I needed to be,” she said. “Caring for my residents is what I do, and I didn’t want them to be afraid.”

Andrea is one of the many Marquis and Consonus staff we call heroes—people who day after day, since the COVID-19 pandemic began, have selflessly served their patients and residents. In senior care, rehab, home health, or pharmacy settings, they’ve given their all with little thought to their own health and safety.

Then came the wildfires, brutally destroying countless lives and livelihoods—and now some of those same heroes desperately need all of our help in return.

In this unprecedented disaster, at least four Marquis and Consonus employees have lost their homes. More than a dozen others who live in evacuation zones where the flames continue to rage are still awaiting news, and fearing the worst.

In addition to your generous donations through this GoFundMe campaign, Marquis Companies will be contributing significant dollars to help these heroes and their families rebuild their lives.

Andrea’s home (see photo below) was on a farm in the little town of Gates, Ore. With the church next door on fire and embers flying in the wind, she and her family had little choice but to escape. They drove between flames on both sides of the highway, and slept in the car in a Bi-Mart parking lot.

Despite the harrowing ordeal, and without yet knowing the fate of her beloved home and livestock, Andrea still returned for work in the morning. At the end of her shift, with the campus in increasing jeopardy and buses idling outside for a possible evacuation, she refused to leave, and even spent the night at the facility.

“Through it all, she didn’t miss a minute of work,” said Jen Hoffer, facility administrator, with awe in her voice. “While her own home was burning, she stayed on the job literally day and night to help protect our residents. That’s a true hero.”

Andrea wasn’t alone in her commitment. She’s just one of this tragically large group of devoted Marquis and Consonus staff who, while losing everything in the fire, still continue to give all their incredible energy and compassion to those in their care.

A fire may have taken their homes, but there’s one thing it can never destroy—their love for their residents and colleagues, and their passion for service. After sacrificing so much of themselves for others, they urgently need and richly deserve whatever each of us can give.
