Wilderness Off-road Rescue Vehicle
Anyone who spends time outdoors in a wilderness area like Drummond Island, be it hiking, biking, hunting, snowmobiling or wheeling, knows that a great day could become deadly or life threatening in a heartbeat.
It is our intention to make all of Drummond Island’s outdoor enthusiasts aware, that our Island’s Volunteer Fire department and Ambulance Corps are working to raise $50,000 to purchase an Off-Road Emergency Rescue UTV (better known as a side by side) that is capable of reaching even the most remote locations on the Island. The UTV selected by Drummond Island rescue personnel is custom designed to transport up to four EMT’s and a stretchered trauma patient, in addition to emergency medical supplies. The emergency UTV will also have installed tracks for snow and GPS making it functional across all four seasons.
Recent events on Drummond Island’s ORV trail system this spring brought the need for an emergency rescue UTV with enhanced off-road capabilities into sharp focus. Conventional ambulance and rescue team members attempted to use personal vehicles lacking the functionality to reach an extremely remote site could have resulted in a fatality. The next person to require intervention in these areas may not be so lucky. The need for an off-road emergency rescue vehicle is crucial.
Drummond Island is dominated by boreal forest and rugged wilderness, with cliffs on the eastern side, which are part of the Niagara Escarpment. The Island consists of 87,000 acres, about 150 miles of shoreline and twenty-four different biodiversity types. Sixty-eight percent of the land is state-owned, with 117 miles of hikeable off-road trails.
Please help the Drummond Island Fire and Rescue team reach their goal to obtain a Wilderness Off Road Emergency Rescue Vehicle. It is truly in the best interest of everyone who enjoys recreational activities in Drummond Island’s wilderness.
