Wij zamelen geld in voor onze lieve kat Simba, die helaas een specialistische en erg dure operatie nodig heeft voor een aangeboren levershunt – een zeldzame, ernstige aandoening waarbij gifstoffen niet goed uit zijn bloed worden gefilterd en daardoor zijn hersenen aantasten. Zonder deze operatie is zijn levensverwachting helaas erg kort.

Op 9 april kwam een droom uit: we namen Simba en Nala in huis – broer en zus, en de liefste kittens die we ons maar konden wensen. Ze zijn onafscheidelijk, spelen en slapen altijd samen. Maar al snel merkten we dat er iets niet klopte met Simba: hij viel van de krabpaal, liep tegen dingen aan, kwijlde en had soms een nat neusje. Vreemd gedrag dat soms ineens verdween… maar steeds terugkwam. Ziek? Of toch niet? Of toch wel... Toen hij angstig werd en zijn gedrag veranderde, wisten we dat het fout zat en gingen we naar de dierenarts. Na bloedonderzoek werd meteen duidelijk dat zijn leverwaarden ernstig afweken, en we werden direct doorgestuurd naar het Dierenziekenhuis in Utrecht.

Vanaf hier begonnen de kosten aardig op te lopen - ammoniak test, narcose, echografie... De conclusie was bij de artsen duidelijk: Simba heeft een aangeboren levershunt. Kort gezegd is dit een fout aangelegd bloedvat wat om zijn lever heen loopt, waardoor zijn bloed niet goed wordt gefilterd en er gifstoffen achter blijven, welke ook zijn hersenen aantasten. Hierdoor ontstaan ook de neurologische klachten die we zagen. Hoevaak wij wel niet gehoord hebben dat dit (vooral bij katten) erg zeldzaam is en nauwelijks voorkomt. "In mijn 30 jaar als dierenarts is dit de tweede keer dat ik dit hoor".

De enige oplossing is een specialistische operatie van ongeveer €4.000. En dat is exclusief de ruim €1.000 aan medische kosten die we al gemaakt hebben (bloedtesten, echo, röntgen na een val, enzovoort). Een groot bedrag – maar het alternatief is dat Simba waarschijnlijk niet ouder wordt dan ongeveer 3 jaar.

Wij willen Simba om deze reden graag een kans geven. Simba is met 7 maanden nog jong en sterk. Met deze operatie is zijn prognose goed en kan hij gewoon gezond oud worden – samen met zijn zusje Nala, die hem écht niet kan missen. Hij verdient een kans op een gezond leven.

Daarom vragen we om hulp. Elke bijdrage, hoe klein ook, maakt een wereld van verschil. Zelfs het delen van deze actie helpt enorm. Wij zijn enorm dankbaar voor de steun die wij tot nu toe hebben ontvangen, en zijn dit voor elke vorm van steun die nog komt. Helpen jullie mee?

Hi everyone,

We’re raising money for our loving cat Simba, who sadly needs a highly specialized – and very expensive – surgery to treat a congenital liver shunt. This is a rare and serious condition where toxins are not properly filtered from his blood, which causes damage to his brain. Without surgery, Simba’s life expectancy is heartbreakingly short.

On April 9th, a dream came true: we welcomed Simba and Nala into our home – brother and sister, and the sweetest kittens we could have wished for. They are completely inseparable, always playing and sleeping together. But soon we noticed something wasn’t right with Simba. He started falling off the scratching post, bumping into things, drooling, and sometimes had a wet nose. Strange symptoms that would disappear just as quickly as they came… but they kept returning. Was he sick? Maybe not? Or maybe yes… When his behavior became anxious and started to change, we knew something was wrong and took him to the vet. Bloodwork showed that his liver values were severely off, and we were immediately referred to the Veterinary Hospital in Utrecht.

From there, the costs began to rise quickly – ammonia tests, anesthesia, ultrasounds… The vets were clear in their diagnosis: Simba has a congenital liver shunt. In short, a blood vessel is incorrectly formed and bypasses the liver, meaning his blood isn’t filtered properly and toxins accumulate in his body, affecting his brain. This also explains the neurological symptoms we had seen. We’ve been told several times how rare this condition is in cats: “In my 30 years as a vet, this is only the second time I’ve seen it,” one of the specialists told us.

The only option is a specialist surgery costing around €4,000 – and that’s not including the €1,000+ we’ve already spent on tests, scans, and x-rays (after a fall due to a possible hip injury). It’s a huge amount of money – but the alternative is that Simba likely won’t live beyond the age of 3.

That’s why we want to give Simba a fighting chance. At just 7 months old, he is still young and strong. If the surgery is successful, his outlook is very good and he can go on to live a full and healthy life – together with his sister Nala, who truly can’t be without him. He deserves that chance.
