Who is policing these police?

THIS CASE IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS

Background
Metro Coverage

Neomi Bennett (Single mother of 3 who is a practising Registered Nurse and Entrepreneur) her sole purpose in life is to help others.  Since 1998 Neomi has worked in the caring profession, helping disadvantaged, vulnerable individuals who require care and support.

Neomi's dedication to the medical profession and her belief that every human being should be treated with due care and respect led her to develop a medical device to avoid preventable deaths by Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  As a result of this medical device, Neomi was given a BEM by the Queen in 2018 as well as many other awards & accolades for her contribution to Healthcare.

In April 2019 Neomi was sitting in her car in Wandsworth (London) when she was apprehended by 5 members of the metropolitan police. They were shining torches in her car and this was very frightening.
In a state of panic and worried for her own safety, Neomi questioned the officers (some in plain clothes) on the basis for the search and why she was being asked to exit her car.

Neomi required medical assistance during her 19 hours in police custody and thereafter for an injury to her body.

This harrowing case highlights just how law-abiding citizens can become embroiled in the criminal justice system for obstructing police officers as a result of a stop and search. Too many individuals are being stop and searched for no apparent reason. Due to the colour of Neomis skin and due to the fact that she was sitting in her car was enough provocation to deem her to be a threat to society.

Neomi, like most law abiding citizens did not have any unlawful and illegal item in her possession, and yet she has been charged with obstruction for taking too long to exit her vehicle.  Neomi has now been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a direct result of this horrific incident with the Police.

The whole experience has had a profound emotional, mental and physical impact on her. Neomi needs to clear her name and in doing so, she hopes to stand up for other innocent individuals who have been unnecessary targeted or profiled and has therefore mounted a legal defence to contest the charge.

Call to action!

As Neomi is not eligible for legal aid and unable to pay all the legal cost bills, Neomi needs to raise funds to pay for solicitors fees including an expert report.

Neomi's case is a classic example of police abuse and misuse of stop and search powers. Incidents like this need to be challenged, no-one should have to live in fear that if they don’t ‘obey’ an instruction that they can be harmed, humiliated, and forced to defend charges for offences that they did not commit.

StopWatch's recent report The Colour of Injustice highlights the persistent ethnic disparities in the number of Black and ethnic minority people being stopped and search.

We need to send a clear message to the metropolitan police that this sort of victimisation against ordinary law abiding citizens has to stop, please support us by donating however much you can afford (every penny counts) as together we will make a difference.
