Peggy's Lifesaving Vet Surgery

Peggy urgently needs lifesaving surgery. Her jaw joints are both fused in a position slightly open by a few millimetres. Peggy cannot open or close her jaw even one millimetre. This is extremely dangerous as if she was to vomit, or to get something stuck in her mouth or throat she could choke to death or be starved of oxygen. This is no exaggeration and Peggy needs this life saving surgery before it is too late. Peggy cannot chew her food, let alone groom herself. Her fosterer is currently have to blend her food until it is a smooth liquid. Any lumps could be disastrous for Peggy. The vet thinks that Peggy is only around 5 years young, but no older then 8 years young.
Peggy came into Goldie’s Cat Rescue’s care in at the beginning on November 2014. Peggy was found by a couple living as a stray in their garden. She had no microchip and no one came forward for her so the couple kept Peggy. Sadly they noticed that Peggy had problems eating and their vet found that she had had surgery on her jaw at some point in her life as her jaw was still wired and dental plates still in place, but it had been left so scar tissue had formed over the top and hardened, making it difficult for her to open and close her jaw. The couple did everything they could for Peggy, their first vet turned them away and refused to even touch Peggy, so they took her to a second vet, with the couple maxing out their credit cards to pay her vet bills but sadly their vets did not solve the issue.
The couple then contacted us as Peggy was in so much pain that she started toileting outside her litter tray. When she came to use, she wasfilthy from not being able to groom herself, and she literally drooling bloody. Our vet has tried two surgery’s, both times he tried chiselling away the scar tissue around one of the joints. Unfortunately both times it has only been a temporary fix, and only a few months later the jaw has healed almost shut closed again. The stress of her jaw fusing again caused Peggy’s fur to start falling out. Thankfully we managed to improve her general mental wellbeing and her fur has started to grow up.
We now have a referral to a SPECIALIST, HIGH TECH VET PRACTICE IN SURREY and they carried out a scan last week to see if there is any possibility that they can help poor Peggy.
The 3D CT scan showed that both sides of her jaw are diseased and fused rock solid, however they are confident that they can fix Peggy’s jaw. The specialist vet will do this by breaking Peggy’s jaw at the very back, totally removing the jaw joints and replacing them with soft tissue. This will eventually heal and Peggy will be able to eat normally and be able to groom herself. This surgery is so complex. We have had to travel over 70 miles (each way!) to find a vet who is able to help Peggy. As her jaw is fused stuck, she has to have an incision in her neck to insert a breathing tube now whenever she has surgery. Peggy is really up against it but this is her only chance at an improved quality of life. If we do not try this then sadly the only option is to have her euthanised as she is clearly suffering.
The vet has extremely kindly given us an estimate to do one side of the jaw, which will be £5,000, and he will do the other side of the jaw completely free. The CT scan has cost £1,200 and we are still to pay this amount off. The vet carried out a similar surgery on a kitten only 6 weeks ago after a wardrobe fell on her, and the surgery was a success.
We need to raise the entire £6,200 before the surgery can go ahead. Please can you help towards her life saving surgery? Peggy is such s loving cat. She loves to be cuddled and will spin around and put her paws on your shoulders like a little monkey. Her favourite thing to do is to race up and down the garden, but sadly until she has this surgery we just cannot risk her being outside, or even in a home environment. She is currently in a pen at a cattery, we just cannot risk her ingesting anything and chocking as there would be nothing we could do. If she was to chock, then the only way to save her would be to break her jaw under general anaesthetic but as mentioned previously they would need to insert a tube through her throat, which potentially wouldn’t be possible depending on what she had stuck in her mouth or throat.
Please, even the smallest of donations all add up, we really cannot just give up on her when she is so happy in every other way.
