Support LGBTQ Asylum Seekers in Chicago!

In Chicago and across the state of Illinois, communities are grappling to respond to COVID-19. Among the most vulnerable of those impacted by the pandemic are LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, many of whom already lack stable housing and basic necessities. Unable to access public benefits until their claim has been granted, queer asylum seekers are now at even greater risk of slipping through the cracks.

Vulnerable LGBTQ+ asylum seekers need your help NOW!

Queer Asylum Network is a young nonprofit organization with a mission to provide critical services, including secure housing and mentorship, to LGBTQ asylum-seekers, asylees, and refugees in Chicagoland. Amidst the pandemic, we are finding ways to assist asylum seekers who are here in Chicago, including disbursement of emergency funds needed to help cover food expenses and rent.

Many members of this community are weathering the storm of the pandemic while dealing with many other significant obstacles—from severe medical problems to untreated trauma from their past and current experiences. To make matters worse, LGBTQ+ asylum seekers who already struggle to find gainful employment have been the most affected by unprecedented layoffs, unemployment, and loss of wages.

Without access to any sort of social safety net, they are at even greater risk of homelessness, hunger, and a host of other issues that stem from these challenges.

Here’s how you can help:
First, queer asylum seekers often don’t have the items needed to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. It’s especially difficult for them to isolate or quarantine, as most live in close quarters with other and are in critical need of masks gloves, and hygiene/cleaning products, like soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectants, etc.

Second, as the cold weather quickly approaches, they are in need of winter coats, warm clothing, and boots. Getting equipped for Chicago’s harsh winter is expensive. Without assistance, many will go without, leaving them to battle the elements and freezing temperatures on their own with insufficient gear.

Finally, LGBTQ+ asylum seekers are lacking the most basic necessities, from food and water to finding safe and secure housing where they are free from discrimination, homophobia, and other threats this community often experiences in traditional transitional and public housing. Many are already experiencing homelessness, with others on the brink of eviction.

Queer Asylum Network is the only organization in Chicago with the sole mission of helping queer asylum seekers.

Queer Asylum Network is seeking to raise $5,000 to help see vulnerable LGBTQ+ refugees through the pandemic.
