Whittier Community School Climbing Walls

Donation protected
Greetings my name is Clark Brown. I am the principal and Special Education teacher here at Whittier Community School in Whittier, Alaska.

Whittier is a small fishing community with some very unique characteristics. A former military base that when decommissioned became place many call home now. The majority of the 250+ residents all live in the same building that was completed in 1955 as a military housing structure.

Our school only has 55 students from pre-K to 12th grade. Because of our unique location, our weather is extreme with over 20 feet of snow in the winter and 196 inches of rain in the summer.  It is not uncommon for winds to exceed 60 miles per hour for long stretches of time.  As such, it is often difficult for our children to get outside to exercise and spend time with each other doing healthy activities.  My goal is to provide that opportunity for both students and community gatherings around a healthy and challenging activity that will provide physical, social and emotional strengthening. It is so desperately needed; especially during these times.

The project is to construct four climbing walls with an autobelay system inside the gym. The proposed walls will be used during the school day and will also be available after school and during the summer.

The project would consist of 4 different climbing walls similar to that pictured here.

The cost for this is $105,000. This includes the climbing walls, safety equipment, and getting it to our school and installed properly.
