Whitney Kirkeby

Last Monday, my good friend Whitney was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma, which is a rare, cancerous tumor known as Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. She is only 20 years old and this diagnosis came as a surprise. She is currently a full time cosmetology student and is also working towards her bachelors in business at Idaho State University.
The current steps in her treatment plan are chemotherapy and radiation which will last approximately 43 weeks. Whitney will be traveling between Pocatello, Idaho and Salt Lake City, Utah for treatment, at least once a week.
Based of the diagnosis she received, Whitney knows that she will be in SLC at least once a week and may have to stay for up to a week at a time for chemotherapy. She has to get a biopsy ASAP because her lymph nodes are inflamed and the doctors are unaware if it is because the cancer is trying to spread to other parts of her body or because her body is trying to ward off the disease. Because this specific type of cancer is rare in adults and more common within children, Whitney will be receiving treatment at The Primary Children's Hospital. Her treatment involves a combination of 7 different types of medication that she will have to take throughout the course of the 43 weeks. These medications will cause a variety of side affects, resulting in her inability to do everyday things, such as attend school and/or work because she will be too sick. Another side affect, due to the location of the tumor, the radiation and chemotherapy will have on her body is the possibility of her infertility. Due to this possibility, Whitney is looking into other fertility options, which will only increase the cost of her treatment.
Between expensive medical bills, travel costs, and sizable student loans, the expected financial burden will exceed anything Whitney and her family can afford. Prayers or any donations are greatly appreciated to help Whitney and her family through this difficult time.
