“When The Lights Went Out” COVID Fundraiser

Overnight the COVID-19 virus brought the world to its knees. Las Vegas was one of the most devastated cities losing more than 150,000 jobs overnight and as many as 450,000 over the following weeks.
“WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT” underscores the physical and financial devastation. The documentary also highlights many heroes who fought back. The Spirit of Humanity is alive and well in this documentary film. The world premiere of "When The Lights Went Out" will be July 15th @ 7PM on NBC KSNV News 3 Las Vegas!
I’m the producer of “WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT.” I live in Las Vegas and want to raise as much money as possible to help my fellow citizens who have been destroyed by the virus. Seeing my community devastated has been quite emotional, and all money raised will go to countless families in desperate need.
Money will be split between two worthy organizations who always do great work and have further stepped up in the wake of COVID: The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada and Speedway Children's Charities.
About Speedway Children's Charities
We are a foundation dedicated to helping thousands of local children with educational, financial, social and/or medical needs.
In 2019, we awarded 59 local children’s charities with $274K.
Last year’s grants provided low-income students with vision screenings and eyeglasses, sent children with cancer to specialized medical summer camps, provided food for children and their families on the weekends, purchased therapeutic games and toys to help pediatric burn care patients, provided new books and book bags to children in low-income neighborhoods and so much more.
We coordinate various events throughout the year to raise funds to distribute to worthy nonprofit organizations in Southern Nevada.
Nonprofit organizations across America, and the communities they serve, have been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We at SCC Las Vegas have been similarly impacted because of the health-safety restrictions placed on public events, which represent the major source of our funding.
Our Grant Ceremony is in December and local children’s charities are currently applying for grants to help the kids they support. We want to continue providing grants to our applicants as they are looking to us for funding to help build child-friendly community programs and provide resources.
Since the pandemic began, we’ve spotlighted the exceptional work and immediate needs of many of our past grantees. If our supporters can also help our grantees with donations and volunteer to help them, we know we’ve helped make a difference. We have to work together, because children still need us. We can’t stop providing services for so many children who are relying on SCC and other charities to support them.
About The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada
The Salvation Army has been very busy in response to COVID-19.
To start, we expanded our free daily meal to 1 – 2:30 p.m. (it was 1:30 – 2:30 previously) to allow more people to come and get a free meal, serving as many as 500 or 600 in that 90-minute period. We created over 6,000 pandemic kits to give to homeless and others who would not have had access to masks, gloves, sanitizer, etc. We took our mobile Emergency Disaster Services canteen to 3 senior apartment complexes 3 days each week for several weeks to deliver meals and some fresh produce. We expanded our overnight shelter to accommodate an additional 30 men and 20 women.
With a large donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we gave nearly 1,400 families 2,000 boxes of non-perishable food and $20 gift cards for groceries on May 15 at North Las Vegas City Hall.
That is just some of the services provided by The Salvation Army Southern Nevada during these past 3 months.
