A Survivor's Tale: Wheels for Kiara

Within the past few months, I've had the pleasure of getting to know an incredibly courageous woman.  What started out as a simple message to commend her amazing performance in a musical I attended with my wife has turned into an opportunity to get to know someone who could not possibly be any more deserving of this campaign.

Throughout my life, I have constantly been reminded of the harsh reality that is domestic violence.  At a young age, I saw it impact my sister upon losing her teacher to a heinous act of domestic violence.  Ten years later, a close friend lost his mother in a similar mindless act.

This campaign, however, is not about me.  Lost in this chaos and senselessness are the survivors of this wickedness.  No one deserves to be a prisoner in a relationship, and some people never get the opportunity to walk away.  This is not due to a lack of courage, but rather an abundance of terror.   Fortunately, some people are afforded the opportunity to escape.  My friend, Kiara, is one of these people.

As you can see, Kiara has a beautiful daughter she cares for deeply.  She works incredibly hard and finds creative ways to make ends meet, but she faces one glaring problem:  She does not have a vehicle.  Kiara bikes whenever she can to get herself and her daughter where they need to go, but, living in the upper midwest, it is just a matter of time before snow and cold hits again that will leave conditions unsafe for this kind of transportation.

Escaping a terrorizing situation has left her vulnerable.  One of these vulnerabilities is financially, and if I could, I would fund this campaign by myself.  Unfortunately, as a recently married graduate student, this is out of the realm of possibility.  However, my wife and I will be pledging the first 50 dollars toward the campaign.

All of the money raised as part of this campaign will be given directly to Kiara.  I would love to raise enough for her to be able to buy a dependable car to warmly and safely transport her and her daughter.  However, I am confident she would be elated with any amount received, as it can go toward food, bills, and other necessessities to give her some room to breathe financially and truly enjoy the precious time she has with her daughter with a little less stress.

Every dollar counts.  Lets remind this courageous woman that she is more than the violence and that people do care.
